It’s official: The sequel to Guillermo del Toro‘s kaiju/mecha megahit is set for release in approximately 3 years.
Legendary Pictures (via Buzzfeed) has released the following information regarding Pacific Rim 2:
Guillermo del Toro returns to direct Legendary Pictures’ PACIFIC RIM 2, the next chapter of the epic action-adventure he created with 2013’s hit original film. Zak Penn will write the script with del Toro. Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni once again produce alongside del Toro, Mary Parent and Callum Greene. Jillian Share will executive produce. Universal Pictures will release the film worldwide in 3D and IMAX 3D.
Screenwriter Zak Penn (X-Men: The Last Stand, etc.) is working on the script along with Pac Rim screenwriter Travis Beacham, who will also be working on the overall franchise development (translation: Expect Pac Rim 3 sometime before the decade is out).
Del Toro is also working on an animated Pacific Rim series which will be released prior to the sequel–though precisely where and when has yet to be announced.
This news actually interests me more than the announcement of the sequel (we ALL knew it was only a matter of time, anyway). I, personally, think animation suits Pac Rim better than live-action–but I guess we’ll see…
Thing is, I’m probably the only nerd in the multiverse who didn’t think Pac Rim was the Second Coming: It reminded me a lot of Avatar–a technological masterpiece with bupkus for plot. I’m hardly an action junkie, but when Pac Rim was slow, it rivaled continental drift. The battle scenes were great–I just do not enjoy movies that hang everything on action and special effects…It’s like watching someone else play a video game.
Del Toro is BETTER than that, too: This wasn’t James Cameron or Michael Bay: This was the man who gave us Pan’s Labrynth–not like a complex story was beyond his capabilities.
Maybe in the form of an animated series, they’ll be able to develop the story without making everything that’s not big metal things pounding on big scaly things seem so dull. And, hopefully, the Jaegers will have learned to not wait until all hope is lost before breaking out their swords.
But I digress.
Pacific Rim 2 is scheduled for release on April 7th, 2017.
