After the abrupt departure of the directing team of Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who were ousted after four and a half months of shooting by Lucasfilm over creative and tonal differences on set for Han Solo: A Star Wars Story, Ron Howard was high on everyone’s list of replacements. Word around the Internet is that Howard will be confirmed as director today.

Here’s the just released statement from Lucasfilm:

At Lucasfilm, we believe the highest goal of each film is to delight, carrying forward the spirit of the saga that George Lucas began forty years ago,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “With that in mind, we’re thrilled to announce that Ron Howard will step in to direct the untitled Han Solo film. We have a wonderful script, an incredible cast and crew, and the absolute commitment to make a great movie. Filming will resume the 10th of July.

Howard is a safe choice to step in, he’s known for his steady on set leadership and ability to work with others. THR sources say Howard will be meeting with the cast to soothe ruffled feathers as well as review the rough cut of the moive so far to see what is needed to deliver a finished film.

Lawrence Kasdan‘s dissatisfaction with Lord and Miller is reported to be the reason behind their departure and while it would be intersting to see if any friction develops between Kasdan and Howard, that would be almost as unexpected as the firing of Lord and Miller.

There are three and a half more weeks of scheduled shooting along with five weeks of reshoots, how much of this time will be spent bringing Howard up to speed and then added to the back-end of the schedule is unknown, but one would expect there would be some long nights as the production sticks to the May 25, 2018 release date.

This is not the first time that Howard has been approached to direct a Star Wars film. Howard recently revealed that George Lucas had talked with him about directing Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.

Now let’s talk about getting Clint Howard into this Han Solo movie…
