Attention Dark Tower fans. As you may or may not know, Ron Howard, Akiva Goldsman and Brian Grazer television and film (yea they’re doing both) adaptation of Stephen King’s magum opus has hit a bit of a snag. Basically, Universal Studios looked at the budgetary scope of ‘The Dark Tower’ and said “Fuck off, you don’t get to play with that much money”. So, budget was cut and script rewrites are currently in progress. To accommodate these changes plans to begin shooting the first film have been pushed back to the fall. Or, at least that’s what we last heard. Recent news says it’s now being pushed back to the spring.

Ron Howard spoke with EW, saying

We had to pull back to our September start date due to budget delays and ongoing story development and logistical issues, but Dark Tower is moving forward… We’re thinking of starting in early spring now.

Honestly, I think if they axed this stupid planned structure of mixing movies with TV series. Make several movies, or make a TV series. One or the other.

Oh, what of Javier Bardem. He’s been said to be the top choice for the gunslinger. Howard gave an update on this too, saying:

I can’t really say who’ll be in it yet, but Javier Bardem has shown a great deal of interest. We’ll know by the end of the summer, when our flashing green light goes solid.

I don’t know why they like Bardem so much. Yea, he’s a fine actor and all, but he’s not what most would envision for the role. Nerd consensus leads towards Timothy Olyphant. Shit kid, have you seen him in ‘Justified’. He’s the epitome of the gunslinger.

Anyway, when I see that budget cuts have been made and look at some of the creative talent involved (Ron Howard is not that good), I’m inclined to think TV or film adaptations are less and less likely to happen. And, if they do, they’re are most certainly gonna suck. Dark Tower is epic and it needs to be treated as such. Universal is sitting on a potential gold mine. They’re fucking it up already.
