With a full fledged sequel to Zack Snyder‘s 2013 Man of Steel (reportedly) back on the DC Extended Universe’s ever fluctuating film slate, the assumption was that Zack would be back to bring the next Superman solo movie to the big screen. Well, that might not be the case. Collider is reporting that ‘sources’ close to the Warner Bros. Superhero films are saying that the top choice is for another director to helm a second outing for the Man of Tomorrow (in the current franchise.)

This unnamed source says that the studio is currently courting the man behind Kingsman: The Secret Service, filmmaker Matthew Vaughn, and preliminary conversations about the project have already taken place. Reportedly the two parties are not yet at that ‘deal-making’ stage so haul out a Fortress of Solitude sized grain of salt for this but, if true, it could be to a very inspired choice for the film’s direction.

Vaughn, no stranger to the capes and tights film set (X-Men: First Class and the semi-satirical R-rated Kick-Ass are both his,) has even apparently once pitched a Superman reboot with his Kick-Ass cohort Mark Millar to WB prior to Man Of Steel. While he has clarified that this ‘pitch’ was little more than a very brief chat, it does offer some insight to his take on the Last Son of Krypton, saying “I think that’s the one thing not to do with Superman, trying to do the serious The Dark Knight version. Superman is about color and fun, or it should be, for me.

And then every Superman fan suddenly cried out “yes!”

Let’s not beat around the bush, fans and comic creators and your mom all had more than a few things to say about the darker/grittier tone that Snyder took in effort to bring the big blue boy scout into the 21st century. Cries that he wasn’t super enough and was a little to ‘man‘ with all his emotions and self-doubt did leave a sour taste in many peoples mouths (and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice did precious little to replace that.)

Could Matthew Vaughn find a way to make a modern take on the 75+ year old property palatable to today’s movie audiences and keep it true the heart and spirit that Superman fans demand? Would a Vaughn fronted Man of Steel sequel see a (spoiler) recently resurrected Kal-El lighten the ‘eff up and smile while saving a puppy? Well, Vaughn did balance heavy emotion and light hearted fun in X-Men: First Class rather well, but then again if you take Kick-Ass into account, Supes might just end up dropping a few c-bombs while hosing down LexCorp tower with a mini-gun.

Again, even if this IS true, Vaughn and Warner Bros. aren’t even at the negotiation stage yet so we’ll just have to wait and see if he joins the DCEU fold.
