Stan Lee Confirms ‘Black Panther’ Movie

the new pic

If Stan Lee is right, Marvel is pretty great at keeping things on the down low. It’s actually pretty amusing how they dodge questions, deny information, send us on wild goose chases and all that. And I respect them for it, because half the fun of all this are the pleasant surprises you never see coming. Not to say that I believe Stan-the-Man on this because he could just be reflecting Marvel big-wig Kevin Feige’sBlack Panther is in development” line. All this could mean that a movie is being planned for six years from now. It could lead us down into a rumor mill. Quite frankly, it could mean nothing. But I’m willing to bank on the idea that the guy who basically made comics awesome knows what he’s talking about when he says this movie is happening.

But we KNEW it was happening. That’s where we are right now. We’re talking about a movie we knew was coming eventually but we never knew when because of Marvel’s grand design concerning the story arc they’re following. For the noobs, these movies are setting up a huge showdown with Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet. I feel for anyone who didn’t read those comics because that was a stellar story. It’s gonna look even more awesome on film, and will definitely include The Black Panther. But for anyone who wondered or had doubts or just didn’t know what was going on, Stan Lee is here to help. He was in Canada last Friday at the Fan Expo talking about a Black Widow movie and he either let it slip during an interview or it wasn’t that big a secret. He’s 91 years-old, so I’m thinking he let it slip…

“The chances are she will have her own movie because eventually all the superheroes are going to have their own movies. They are already working on Ant-Man, Doctor Strange and the Black Panther, and there are others I am not allowed to talk about.”

Stan, I’m not sure you were allowed to talk about THAT! But there we are, B.P. is in the mail because, according to Mr. Lee, Marvel is “working on it.” He also said this at New York Comic Con some time ago…

“The people at Marvel are spending hours trying to think ‘what’ll we do next.’ … They’re fans of the stories and are trying to think ‘what will the fans like to see next? What would we like to see next?’ So they’re working on ANT-MAN, working on DOCTOR STRANGE; they’re working on GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY; they’re working on god knows what. Did I say the BLACK PANTHER also? They’re the ones I know about.”

Like I said, that could mean many many things. However, none of this is a real surprise because T’Challa’s (The Black Panther’s alter ego) existence is well-documented throughout the films thanks to Vibranium. Vibranium is a rare metal that is mined only in Wakanda, the African country under T’Challa’s kingly rule. Somehow the U.S. government got their hands on some and built Captain America’s shield from it. Vibranium is near-indestructible and will “vibrate” on impact before it even considers shattering, as Thor found out badly in the first ‘Avengers’ movie. Wakanda is shown on a map in ‘Iron Man 2.’ Ultron, from ‘Avengers 2: Age Of Ultron’ is hinted to be made of this metal, connecting The Black Panther once again to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. My point is, if we didn’t know this movie was coming, we’re either blind or total morons. The question was only when, to which we still have no answers. But Stan makes it sound like it’s soon and there’s been speculation about casting the role left and right.

‘Star Wars: Episode 7’ star John Boyega did a Dwayne Johnson and tweeted this tease back in July but it didn’t really go anywhere. But curiouser and curiouser! Was he meeting with Marvel to talk about the job? He made it clear that he wants it.

And then you’ve got Chad Boseman, who is the flavor of the month right now because his acting chops have been put on display handily in the biopics ’42’ and ‘Get On Up.‘ Here’s a video of him responding to questions about playing Marvel’s first black superhero.

Not only that, but fans have run their mouths for years about who they think should play this character. I’ve heard absolutely ridiculous ideas like Terry Crews and Samuel L. Jackson. I’ve also fielded submissions for characters who are just bad for the role, like The Rock and Michael Jai White. Movie Pilot is dead set on thinking Djimon Hounsou will play T’Challa despite the fact that he’s far too old for it.  Not to mention he’s already got a Marvel job in ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy.’

My pick is Boseman. He’s perfect for the position. But let’s not forget that the first Black Panther was T’Challa’s dad. I could put up with Hounsou playing that role and I’d just act like I’m not noticing his ‘GOTG’ appearance. Who would you cast in the role of The Black Panther? Comment below!
