When Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace came out, despite your feelings about the film, there was one thing we could all agree on: Darth Maul was awesome! Why? Because he had a double-edged lightsaber, yo! Too simplistic? Maybe, but it looks like in the new animated series Star Wars: Rebels, the creators are upping the game by giving the villainous Inquisitor not just a lightsaber, and not just a double-lightsaber, but a spinning double-lightsaber. Taking bad ass to a whole new level, the blow clip introduces The Inquisitor (voiced by Jason Isaacs) and and his twirling weapon of hot death.

So who is this Inquisitor? Well, he’s a Sith, I guess, and he’s not too fond of Jedis. Spoiler alert, but Kanan, the main character of Rebels voiced by Freddie Prinze Jr. is one of the Jedis to survive the purge and live in hiding, and Ezra (Taylor Gray), a street kid who joins Kanan’s crew, discovers that the Force is worth him too, so they’ve both just made The Inquisitor’s to do list. I’m guess the below clip is from their first encounter, which isn’t in the first episode, but it makes it clear that either Kanan’s Jedi skills are rusty, or The Inquisitor is a force to be reckoned with. Let’s roll the clip:

It’s important to keep a careful eye on The Inquisitor, as it has been rumored that The Inquisitors – plural – will play a major part in Star Wars Episode VII. It’s been previously rumored that Rebels will be a platform to introduce characters and concepts that will play out in the new trilogy, so is The Inquisitor the first/best/most obvious example? I guess we’ll find out soon.

By the way, I got the chance to see the first episode of Star Wars Rebels last month at Fan Expo in Toronto, and if you’re at all interested, you can read my spoiler-free review, and I, for one, am very interested to see more.

Star Wars Rebels premieres next month on Disney XD.
