Although Spectre was greeted somewhat middling fanfare back in November, it seems more and more likely that it will be Daniel Craig‘s swan song as James Bond 007; so now speculation has turned from “Will Craig return?” to “Who will succeed Craig?” in the role. Homeland’s Damian Lewis and the consistently busy Idris Elba were the obvious candidates, but soon a dark horse emerged, and if U.K. bookies are to be believed, the dark horse is now the safe bet, and his casting could go from speculation to announcement in a “matter of days.” Are you ready to see the rightful King of Asgard serve on Her Majesty’s Secret Service? Because that’s where the money is.
Coral bookmakers told The Guardian over the weekend that they are suspending bets on Tom Hiddleston being the likely choice for the next James Bond movie, the 25th in the long-running spy series. Reportedly Hiddleston’s odds got better after the actor was spotted meeting with Skyfall and Spectre director Sam Mendes and long-time Bond producer Barbara Broccoli. That, along with four-figure bet with 6-4 odds being place on Hiddleston, the bookies are hearing the message loud and clear.
“There’s no smoke without fire, and following the big gamble on Tom Hiddleston in the last 24 hours, we’ve had no choice but to pull the plug on the market Earlier in the year there was a gamble on Idris Elba and Damian Lewis, but nothing has come close to the recent gamble on Hiddleston.”
Although he’s widely thought of best for his role as Loki in the Marvel Studios’ Avengers movies, Hiddleston has been winning rave reviews for his role on the British series The Night Manager (which airs on AMC here in North America). In the miniseries, Hiddleston plays a soldier-turned-spy who is asked to penetrate the inner circle of an international arms dealer, which could be seen as training camp for playing 007. On top that, Hiddleston recently stated his fondness for the character in an interview with The Sunday Times:
“I simply love the theme tune, the tropes and the mythology. I love the whole thing. If it ever came knocking, it would be an extraordinary opportunity. And I’m very aware of the physicality of the job. I would not take it lightly.”
Whether Hiddleston gets the call, or Craig gets the call back, production on Bond 25 will likely begin sometime early next year for a likely November 2018 release. What do you Bastards think about Hiddleston becoming Bond? Feel free to sound off below.
