10 Cloverfield Lane
At the end of the year, we like to look back and take stock of our movie going lives. It was a rough year, no question. Many of the movies we were looking forward to most over the last 12 months took every opportunity to disappoint, but, as always, we can at least make a list of 10 films that stood out above all others in the realms of sci-fi, action and horror, and 2016 was no exception. About a month ago, the trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane surprised everybody with its theatrical debut. All over the internet there were hype pieces and fan theories of what the story will entail. It’s pretty much safe to say that most people who saw the trailer were thinking the same thing: “how can a movie involving John Goodman and Mary Elizabeth Winstead in a basement possibly relate to a found footage film about a giant monster?” The possibilities were practically endless. You may have missed this last night on The Walking Dead, seeing as how you were probably being pulled off the ceiling after reacting to all the high drama, but a brand new 10 Cloverfield Lane trailer premiered during the commercial break. The sudden and surprising sequel and/or spin-off of the 2008 found footage hit Cloverfield will hit theaters in just a couple of weeks, and darned if still have any idea what it’s going to be about. This new trailer sends a bold message thematically though suggesting that there will be monsters outside, and inside, the bunker beneath the titular setting. (more…)
The sudden announcement of 10 Cloverfield Lane‘s imminent release last month caught all observers by surprise, especially since it features three well-known and busy actors – Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Gallagher Jr. and John Goodman. The fact that producer J.J. Abrams could pull off another secret Cloverfield project, especially with top-drawer acting talent, is a magic trick the man behind the mystery box deserves a lot of credit for pulling off. Adding fuel to the speculative fire now is a new 30-second ad that premiered during the Super Bowl, and while the first trailer showed off the tension indoors, this TV commercial offers hints of what’s happening outdoors.
