By this time in 2014, as fans were counting down to the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, we knew the film’s name, and we had already enjoyed many times the first 88-second trailer. Compare that to where we are for Star Wars Episode VIII, and not only have we yet to see anything official in the way of footage, we haven’t even been given a proper name for it. Of course there’s an argument to be made that trailers these days spoil too much, and if Adam Driver had his way, that’s exactly why you wouldn’t see anything from the film until the day its released. Inevitably, any sequel, whether it’s Star Wars or not, will be compared to The Empire Strikes Back. The second Star Wars film made people rethink what you could do with a sequel by showing that you can continue the story, while expanding the thematic pallet and remixing the trappings that the audience have come to expect. You can even leave them with a twist, a cliffhanger, and an unhappy ending, and you’ll only leave the audience wanting more. So with the tremendous success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the already sky high expectations can only be increased when someone mentions the words, “The Empire Strikes Back.” (more…)


It was this time last year that we got our first look at Star Wars: The Force Awakens. That teaser was a minute-and-a-half long and featured only seven shots, but there was also a mysterious voiceover that we’ve since learned was spoken by Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis), “There has been an awakening. Have you felt it?” Now, almost exactly one year later, we get an answer as to who Snoke was talking to. It seems like we’re getting new footage by the day in 30-second or one minute increments, but for the first time, it seems like the new normal of the Dark Side is getting the spotlight in a TV ad. Sure, August isn’t even half over yet, but that doesn’t mean we can’t look ahead to the fall. Or December for that matter. Of course, it’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens that we all want to hear about, see footage from, and digest every morsel about, and as luck would have it, Entertainment Weekly‘s Fall Movie Preview arrives this week to fill that gaping void in new Star Wars news that just wasn’t filled by that two seconds of the new footage from the international trailer.
