America

The final poster for Captain America. Isn't it so...American?

Paramount Pictures has released eight new TV spots for Marvels Captain America: The First Avengers, which premiers this week (“Fuck..YEA!”). For the purpose of keeping myself unsullied (I wanna keep myself an American virgin. Oh..fuck, you know what I mean.), I have refused to watch them. However, I can most certainly tell you there’s explosions, Tommy Lee Jones cratered face, some shield Frisbee throwing and some other shit. Enjoy.

Have you heard the Dunkin’ Donuts tagline “America Runs on Dunkin”? I dunno how much that sells you on coffee and doughy NOMs, but it sure as hell ties in rather well with Captain America: The First Avenger. You’re not a summer blockbuster unless you’re backed by some corporate food chain.

Anyway, thanks to a Captain America Dunkin’ Donuts promotion we have a new film clip and video featurette for the film. The clips shows us a pre-serum Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter arriving at the secret laboratory where he’ll be transformed into the superhero Captain America. It’s nothing spectacular by any means, but does give us brief look into some early character development.

With the promotion for X-Men: First Class and Green Lantern, I’m sure this is the first of many, many clips to come.

Looks like it time for another six months of tea bagging and high-pitched children screaming into your headsets people. The Call of Duty series is back with it’s eighth installment into the Call of Duty franchise and it’s third in the Modern Warfare storyline. Yes, this is a direct sequel to the 2009 smash hit Modern Warfare 2, meaning key characters like ‘Soap’ MacTavish will make a possible return. Until then check out this special reveal trailer from game 4 of  the NBA Western Conference Finals between the Dallas Mavericks and Oklahoma City Thunder.

N00b tubes at the ready people

So what if that ominous voice sounds like a pissed off midget, he sound’s like he means business in this one. Everyone’s favorites are back in this one: running, gunning, running and gunning. It’s like they know exactly what to give the prepubescent fans waiting to spend their hard earned allowance. Hopefully this doesn’t mean we’ll see historic war footage of a solider saying “LOL” as he crouches on his on a enemy combatant’s face.

In a move that will undoubtedly evoke claims of unpatriotic-ness and calls of communism by FOX News,  in Action Comics 900, David Goyer writes a story which sees Superman renounce his….(Wait for it)…. American citizenship. *rolls eyes*

Apparently, after becoming involved in peaceful protests in Tehran which cause ructions for his adopted country. Supes comes to believe that being explicitly seen as a force for the US(be it good or bad) can no longer ensure the safety of the entire world.

Issue 900? Gotta go with something big, but de-Americanizing U.S.A’s iconic boy scout? That’s a bold move. That’s a really bold move. Something many will feel as a betrayal to the people Supes has acquainted himself with for the span of his entire career. Oh God, I can hear the collective thought of every deep rooted southerner, republican and citizen in the bible belt now “Did you her that shit about Superman Denouncing his American Citizenship! Superman Stands for truth, justice, and the American Way!. Quick lets burn every Superman comic and superman related paraphernalia ’cause were ass-backwards ignorant douchecanoes that do shit like that”.

Considering Supes grew up in Smallville, USA and lives in the USA it shouldn’t be a stretch for anyone to understand why he would be American even though his origin is Kryptonian, but Superman was sent to Earth to protect Earth, not just America. He kind of does need to renounce his American ties in order to protect the rest of the world, if only to remain as a neutral party who is only interested in protecting the world from evil.

While this was nothing but a cheap way to sell comics it does invite an interesting discussion (Thanks Goyer). USA and its moral standard is the reason that Superman conducts himself the way he does. Is renouncing his US citizenship a slap in the face to his adoptive heritage? Or, does it make sense for him to cut his ties in favor of being a more effective world protector?

Next up: Captain America burns the American flag. Probably.

zombiesupervillainsfrench

But Luke, “The French are frog leg eatin’, hairy arm-pitted, rude, anti-Americans. What’s the deal?”. OK, while it’s true that America and France like to piss on each other (not in any kind of fetish way. that shit’s nasty) the stream of strife can be lifted in the observance of awesome-ness. Say what you will about the French, but when they play in the sandbox of Superheroes and Zombies, and do it well, us Americans must give them a tip of the hat and break some cheese and wine.

The French can do ‘film’, that’s a give in, but superheroes? Lets observe ‘Prodigies’ from Antoine Charreyron shall we. Which, oddly is not  super hero film at all. It centers around a group of gifted teenagers whose past traumas cause them to wreak havoc against the world — and the one person capable of putting a stop to their revenge. So actually it’s a super villain film. How nice!

I’ll let the 60 second teaser trailer speak for itself (below)

Angry teenagers. City-wide destruction. Swirling cameras- all hypnotically set to “Exogenesis Symphony Pt 1: Overture” by Muse- certainly gives me a nerd chub. I flip my pinky in the air with approval.

In short, ‘Prodigies’ (French title: La nuit des enfants rois)  a very good French CGI movie.

Warner Bros. is releasing the film in France on March 9th, 2011. A U.S. release isn’t too far off.

NOW, moving on to Zombies.
