Dwayne Johnson Black Adam Shazam

We’ve known for a very very (very) long time that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson (famously from Fast and Furious and infamous for The Tooth Fairy,) will star as the immortal Egyptian anti-hero  in the someday coming Captain Marvel Shazam/Black Adam movie that is apparently still someday coming, but who’d be playing the good guy that the former wrestler turned actor’s bad guy? Well Mr. The Rock Johnson, who is also reportedly producing the film, did give a not so subtle hint to We Got This Covered on who he’d want to see suited up as the scarlet draped acronym powered hero.  (more…)

For as long as there’s been discussions about the DC Extended Universe, there’s been a something there in the corner of your eye, and if you focused too hard on it, it would vanish before you know it. It was the Black Adam movie, a project about the Shazam! antihero and antagonist that had signed Dwayne Johnson to star as the titular character. And then nothing happened, and continued to not happen, for the next several years. Well things have been heating up on Black Adam lately, enough for the fans to wonder if we’re any closer to actually (finally) seeing this thing on screen.  (more…)

With production and distribution rights belonging to New Line Cinema and not Warner Bros, the question remains… Is Shazam part of the DC Movie Universe, or not? New Line’s Toby Emmerich made some comments a while back indicating that the character may become a standalone franchise that sits apart from any other built up Universe. But, alas, a new post from DC has now upset the applecart, suggesting that Shazam might actually be part of the DC Universe, alongside Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. So, the ultimate question on our minds now – is if the character going to be an active group participant in The Justice League? (more…)

Now that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is officially locked in as Black Adam for the upcoming Shazam movie, even more details are starting to come out. While it’s interesting that we’re finding out who will be playing the villain in a movie before we even find out who the hero will be and that this will be the first DC/Warner Bros. movie that doesn’t center on one of the main Justice Leaguers, like Batman, Superman, or Wonder Woman, that’s not all that is unique about this movie, as New Line president Toby Emmerich revealed today.

Well, after months of speculation, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has just confirmed that not only will he be starring in WB/DC’s upcoming adaptation of Shazam, but has confirmed the role that he will be playing.  Many people had assumed that The Rock would choose to take on the role of Shazam, the secret identity of Billy Batson.  However, it appears that Johnson has decided to go a different route by joining the cast as supervillain and Shazam arch nemesis – Black Adam. With the recently hot topic of Marvel posting release dates of a plethora of future flicks, everybody forgets that Warner Brothers has 11 comic book movies also in development. Like that bald-headed stepchild its parents keep ditching at the mall, DC has a habit of getting lost in the Hollywood shuffle and struggles to get attention. Today, we got a new piece of news concerning Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and his oft-reported plans of playing a superhero. No stranger to dropping hints, The Rock has a big mouth on Twitter and in interviews when it comes to donning tights on film. Problem is, he can almost never be trusted. But here he is again tossing clues like softballs about what seems like a done deal.  (more…)

Rock02Few actors have been connected to more live action comic book (particularly DC) adaptations than WWE legend Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Fanboys, “insiders”, and rumor mongers have mentioned him as a possible candidate for such characters as Green Lantern, Black Adam, Martian Manhunter, Gravedigger, and Lex Luthor.

Johnson was in Las Vegas at CinemaCon promoting his upcoming film, Hercules: The Thracian Wars, and he took the time to address the question of which, if any, DC character he might be in serious negotiations to portray on the big or small screen:  (more…)

DC New 52, it was only nine months ago that this re-boot of the entire DC Universe set the comic book community a buzz. How much would the canon we all grew up with change and would it reduce the integrity of the characters? Well with the constant competition between DC & Marvel, there has been a constant struggle to keep up or make an concept better than the other.

With Marvel’s recent announcement that they plan to wed two gay characters in next month’s issue of Astonishing X-Men, it should be no surprise that DC has an announcement of their own for the LGBT community. The face of LGBT at DC Comics has been Batwoman; the fiery red-head and former soldier  kicked out of the Army due to “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”, returns home to don the cape & cowl to fight crimes. But it won’t be enough to compete with Marvel’s big announcement, so what could DC have up its sleeve.

At Kapow Comics Convention in London over the weekend, DC co-publisher Dan DiDio was asked about the possibility of other DC Characters “coming out of the secret lair” due to the reboot. DiDio responded that he

“…was more interested in introducing new LGBT characters to the DC Universe than in rebooting old characters as gay or bisexual.”

But he did let slip that

“…the company’s about to re-introduce a previously straight character who will become “one of our most prominent gay characters” alongside the likes of Batwoman.”

So this clues us into the fact that the reboot of sexual orientation will not be for a prominent character in the DC Universe, i.e: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and etc. It may come from a character who will be making a reappearance in the universe after many years or one we haven’t seen  yet. Among the possible contenders could be: Martian Manhunter, Black Adam, Shazam! (aka Captain Marvel) and Hawkgirl. Of course they could just amp up Poison Ivy being a hardcore plant-lesbian, just sayin’.

Place your bets, and sit tight ’cause DC is keepin’ their lips sealed on the identity of the new LGBT character coming to DC.

Maybe, if the production can ever leave “development hell,” as actor Dwayne Johnson puts it. MTV News recently talked to the wrestler-turned-actor about the likelihood we’ll be seeing a film based on the world’s mightiest mortal:

In Hollywood, a lot of times when something is in development, it just takes a lot of time. So it’s in development hell right now. Who knows what’s going to happen with that. Maybe, maybe not — I’m always here.

Johnson has for some time been rumored to be attached for the role of Black Adam, Captain Marvel’s nemesis. Warner Bros. is all gung ho about pushing out more super hero movies; recently they let it slip there might be a Justice League movie in the works; would the Shazam! property be a good choice? You couldn’t use the name Captain Marvel in much, if any, of the marketing since that name’s been unavailable to DC due to them not owning the rights. Sure, the character can be referred to as such, but in no way does his name appear in the title of the books. They’re simply called Shazam!. Even if they could, most movie-goers would confuse Captain Marvel with Marvel Comics, something I’m sure DC wants to avoid.

While this film might never happen at least there’s a pretty decent Captain Marvel short from Warner Bros. Animation, Superman/Shazam!: The Return of Black Adam. In this short, Arnold Vosloo voices Black Adam and he’s perfect. You might recognize Vosloo from the two good Mummy movies as the…uh, the mummy. Interesting connections; the second Mummy film is what rocketed Johnson to the spotlight as more than “The Rock.”

Who do you think would make a fantastic Black Adam? Or would you rather this project slip farther into the depths of the development abyss?
