Book of Eli

The last couple of days there have been a couple of not-so-interesting twitter pictures from the set of M. Night Shyamalan‘s sci-fi picture After Earth, showing everything from Will Smith standing around to Will Smith and Jaden Smith standing around, sometimes with trees, sometimes near a pool. Nothing in costume.

So It’s not just the absence of Will that makes this latest example the best yet.

It’s the costume.

This is our first look at something designed for the film – some kind of set, or prop, or (as it happens) costume, created specifically for this movie. It’s not a lot to go on, but it’s something. What might those nobbly bumpy bits on his left side mean?

The After Earth script got a recent rewrite by Stephen Gaghan (Traffic). Shyamalan of course, did a pass or two at the script himself and considering Book of Eli writer Gary Whitta started off  the whole process in the first place, the script should be pretty close to camera ready.

After Earth is a sci-fi tale chronicling an estranged father and son’s journey through a desolate Earth after their spacecraft crashes on the long -barren planet 1,000 years in the future.

akiraAkira, an anime my folks didn’t want me to watch when I was young because of its violence but still wanted me to watch when I got the chance, and man, was I glad to finally watch it. For those who haven’t seen it, its a film set in a futuristic post-apocalyptic Tokyo and with psychic and military warfare included. There has been talks for couple years now that we would be getting a live action Akira movie but seems like the writers strike put a halt in it (what did WGA Strike not hurt or stopped?). It seems Book of Eli directors, Albert and Allen Hughes are in talks with WB to direct the rumored 2 film adaptation of the hit anime and manga series. Do you guys think they will be able to pull of what it takes for Akira to be translated well from Anime/Manga to Live Action, or is this something we should be worried about. One thing I know, it’ll be better than Kanye West’s Stronger music video.

The Battle this weekend is between jolly blue giants, the ghost of a little girl, and a book called Eli.

Which I’m probably sure most of you know by know is that Avatar wrecked the box office last weekend for another domestic 48 mill, and took it’s spot in its head spinning 4th week. But this week is a different story altogether…I had to beat them to death with their own shoes….(Sorry, movie quote). We have Denzel’s post apocalyptic mashup of I am Legend and The Road “The Book of Eli” and Peter Jackson’s “The Lovely Bones”, the highly anticipated movie adaption of the novel.

So my quicky Tank or Bank has turned into an impromptu Bank or Bank….Or Bank. The book of Eli does look insanely cool, and Denzel does have the name for his draw, but Avatar has shown to be extremely sturdy. Eli would have taken the number one had Avatar failed or not been released at this time. The Lovely Bones will not have taken the number one spot by my guesstimation, however with Jackson’s rabid fan base, and equally intriguing thriller/mystery added to breathtaking visuals, it may have some legs to keep it a sleeper..

I believe Avatar may still hold #1, with The Book of Eli rummaging in at 2…I also think with Sherlocke’s longevity, it may remain in the top 5…

So, give me your best shot. Whadaya think the rankings will be??? Throw out your best guess work.
