It’s really been 10 years since Firefly met a premature and cold-blooded end at the hands of Fox network executives. You might not realize the years have gone by that quickly, but that’s because we fans still see fit to lament the show’s early exit at every turn. We still organize campaigns to resurrect it. We still write fan fiction. We still hold out hope that it will return to us in some new form or other. To those who aren’t initiated to the ranks of us Browncoats, it might seem like an odd and even ridiculous exercise, but what it really is, whether you like it or not, is a testament to the reach of this show’s particular brand of adventure. Browncoats Unite, a new one-hour special celebrating 10 years since the series’ debut, is both an attempt to explain and chronicle this unlikely afterlife, and though it might not mean much to those who aren’t fans, it is a treat for those of us hoping to revisit the ‘verse for a little more shiny fun.
Browncoats the world wide are waiting in great anticipation for the Science Channel‘s upcoming Firefly 10th anniversary special, Browncoats Unite airing on November 11th. What a strange group we Browncoats are, constantly reminding ourselves of the pain of having one’s favorite show cancelled well before its time. Maybe it’s that we take a certain amount of pride in the show’s post-cancellation success? Or maybe we just like torturing ourselves, it could be really be either/or.
Anyway, Entertainment Weekly shared the first look at the anniversary special last week during all the NYCC hubbub. (Psst, did you check out all our rockin’ NYCC coverage? Including the recap of the Firefly Reunion Panel.) Sadly, that clip was un-embeddable so we were unable to share it with all of you. Thank god for YouTubers and their diligence in making all web video simple and easy to share.
Watch the first clip from Browncoats Unite below, and let us know, will you be tuning in November 11th at 10pm when the special airs?

By now you’ve heard the news there will be a Firefly reunion panel at Comic-Con. It’ll be wonderful and magical. Members of the cast and crew will be there. In person. Just being their lovely, hilarious selves. The whole room will be full of Browncoats celebrating the ten year anniversary of the little sci-fi show that could. And you won’t be there.
Yeah, neither will I, but guess what!? The whole panel is being recorded as part of an anniversary special, Browncoats Unite, airing on the Science Channel on Sunday, November 11th! How freakin’ shiny is that!?
Okay, something a little sooner than November would be nice, but at least this means we’ll have the chance to see the panel in all its Joss Whedon-Tim Minear-Jose Molina-Nathan Fillion–Adam Baldwin-Alan Tudyk–Summer Glau glory, without waiting in hopes for a grainy, cellphone video to be uploaded on YouTube. Though, I’m sure true Browncoats will watch those videos as well. In anticipation.
Debbie Myers, general manager and executive VP of Science, where Firefly lives on in syndication, had this to say about the anniversary special,
Firefly is a landmark work of science fiction and a favorite with our viewers. Ever since it premiered on Science, fans have asked us to do something special to mark its 10-year anniversary. With this signature celebration, punctuated by Browncoats Unite, we will connect the minds behind this classic franchise with its legions of passionate fans.
Oh yeah, did I mention Browncoats Unite will air along with a Firefly marathon? Just in case you don’t already own the series. And why hell don’t you, I might ask? Seriously guys, it’s only one season. One spectacular, amazing series and – oh god, why was it cancelled!!!
