The moderator called him “Canada’s favorite son,” but really Nathan Fillion was treated more unto a god at the National Fan Expo in Toronto Saturday. The people offered him tributes, words of praise and thanks, and in return he awarded the lucky few (hundreds) who were able to attend his early morning Q&A with more than several very funny anecdotes about the enduring appeal of Firefly, his veteran hit detective series Castle, and his admiration for one Benedict Cumberbatch. The name Nathan Fillion has been attached to a lot of superhero parts, and why not? The man looks like he walked out of a 1940s adventure serial all tall, and handsome, and square-jawed, and witty…. Sorry, I was having a moment there. Anyway, given the pedigree, it is kind of surprising that he hasn’t donned a mask, a cape and a pair of tights to fight crime, but the actor says that he’s just been too darn busy fighting crime the old fashioned way as mystery writer Rick Castle on the ABC series Castle.

“Right now, I’m still pretty tied up with Castle,” Fillion told IGN Movies. “I have a couple of years of that to go. We’re having a great time, we’re telling some great stories and we’re enjoying it.”

Despite the fact that his good friends Joss Whedon (Serenity) and James Gunn (Slither) both have major films (The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy respectively) set up at Marvel Studios, Fillion’s in no rush to call in any favors. “Joss and James have done so much for me, I’m not the guy that goes knocking at their door and goes, ‘Do some more for me!’ You know what I mean?” he explains. “They’re doing great stuff right now and I’m having a great time right now, so I think that once I wrap up Castle, and we get a little more free time one our hands… [Nods]”

Sure, he says that now, but what about all those rumors that he’s been offered parts and turned them down? Up to and including the recent rumor that he has up for the part of Dr. Hank Pym in the Ant Man movie? “People want to believe that, but actually, I never have!” says Fillion about being offered the roles.

Having seen a couple of episodes of Castle, I have to say that the show kind of wastes it’s leading man’s gifts on what is actually a pretty prosaic procedural, so anytime we see Fillion stretch and do something new is nothing but good news to me.

Who would you Bastards like to see Fillion play in the Marvel Universe? Is there another hero you’d like to see him play? Sound off below.

You have just read that headline and said, “Who gives a bibble?” Well, the bibble is that Nathan Fillion is a regular contributor of Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, starring in Gunn’s Slither and cameoing in his follow-up, Super. So it’s only natural to suspect that Fillion, whose breakthrough roll was in Avengers director Joss Whedon‘s Firefly, might be on the shortlist for a part in Guardians.

Except….

Fillion says he might be too busy with his day job as the lead on ABC’s hit Castle to star in a major film like Guardians. While promoting Whedon’s indie adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing at the Toronto International Film Festival, Fillion offered the following to MTV when they asked about him playing a part in Guardians.

“I’m very busy right now with a job that I’m grateful for. I’ve made a commitment [to ‘Castle’] and I have to see it through. And I’m really happy to.”

That’s a shame because Castle is an utterly vanilla police procedural that would have been cancelled in its first season had it not been for Fillion’s chemistry with co-star Stana Katic and all the lonely people that became invested in their coupling.

Still, there is some hope. First of all, Fillion’s name has long been associated with the title roll in Ant Man, so maybe he’s still in the running there. Second, if Guardians is to make its summer of 2014 release date it will probably have to start shooting next summer at the latest, just in time for Fillion to be on hiatus from Castle. And finally, both Guardians and Castle come from the same place: Disney studios, and if there’s anyway they can cross-pollinate their franchises and get the star of one into an other, they’ll find a way to make it happen.

More news as it inevitably will develop.

Nathan Fillion & Robert Downey Jr. Team-up

Fans of Nathan Fillion were provided with an interesting video tidbit at the end of last weeks episode of Castle. Everyone felt a disturbance in the nerd force and suddenly there’s Robert Downey Jr. and Nathan Fillion, heads around the world began to explode.

ON the surface it’s just a great oppurtunity to promote the Robert’s role in the upcoming The Avengers movie and Nathan’s continued hit show Castle. This Nerdbastard thinks there might be more.

The backdrop is the same used to promote the red carpet premiere of The Avengers, Robert Downey Jr. tweeted that there was an extra shooting going on that night. Most people believe it to be an after the credits scene. Watch this video and then join me below for more.

OK, welcome back. Neat little promo huh? This NerdBastard was pretty pumped about Nathan and Robert appearing together. Then the mental juices started flowing and I thought, “Wait a minute, what the hell would prompt the powers that be to put these two together?”

Then I thought about some of the comic book roles Nathan has been vocal about. He lost out the Green Lantern role to Ryan Reynolds, but what about Ant-man?

Ant-man is one of the scheduled movies to come after The Avengers. Could Nathan be the star attached? Josh Whedon did make this convention statement back in 2010. With his current star shining bright at Marvel Movie productions, his word could carry a lot of weight.

What do you think, will we be seeing Ant-man after the credits?

Now I can say that Nathan Fillion is a greek god without the embarrassing silence that usually follows. The star of ABC’s Castle has accepted the role of Greek deity Hermes in Fox 2000’s sequel Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Sea of Monsters, based on the second book in Rick Riordan‘s best-selling young-adult book series.

In the Percy Jackson series, Hermes is the father of Percy’s arch enemy Luke, who is played in the films by Jake Abel.

Thor Freudenthal is directing The Olympians, with a release date of 2013 in theaters. Logan Lerman is returning in the starring role of demigod Percy, while Alexandra Daddario and Brandon T. Jackson also are returning to reprise their roles. The first title in the franchise, Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief, grossed $226.5 million at the worldwide box office in 2010. Dylan Neal played the role of Hermes in Lightning Thief.

What do you NerdBastards think about this casting decision?

The Interwebz is a great place for artists to share their nerdy work, even though the majority of the time it’s a bunch of fuckin’ weird shit. There are a ton of awesome things to behold every day but we’re fuckin’ lazy bastards, so we just put it all together once a week to keep your mojos happy. Even from the other side of the world!

This Vincent Van Gogh inspired Dark Knight piece by James Hance is called The Dark (Starry) Knight. It’s pretty awesome, although it’s not the first bit of artwork exploring this same idea. (EDIT: Apparently Hance’s work did come first!)

Squee! San Diego Comic Con, the media mecca for comics, movies, television, video games, toys and more, is a little over 4 weeks a way (July 21-24) . Good lord we can’t wait! Oh, FYI NerdBastards will be in attendance. Luke Gallagher and Mrs. NerdBastards (aka Luke’s mistress, life coach and supplier of NOMs) Crystal H. will be doing some field reporting, schmoozing with celebs, and procuring as much swag as we can. We’ll also be on hand to meet with any NB fans in attendance. Come say hi (Will be wearing NB t-shirts, as scene on splitreason.com). Tell us how much you love us, or how much you hate us. Either way, we’re happy to meet you. Though, if you say some shit, that nullifies your chances of getting any free fan appreciation swag from us. Also,  warning to the busty nerdy girlies out there, Luke is a weak and very perverted man. Stay at-least 5 feet away.

Anyway, as the dates come closer and closer, news on guest appearances, panels and other festivities will be rolling out. At the moment, thanks to TV Line, we have a list of what TV shows and stars will be in attendance.

HIT THE JUMP for the run-down.

Mario’s Art of Plumbing

Mario

We all know that Mario is a very busy man…after all, he tries to save a princess, travels through some pretty amazing worlds and fights off turtles and mushrooms. But what exactly does he do on his day off? Well, he is a plumber of course! (As if you didn’t know…and yet sometimes forget) Anyways, Pat Kinell drew this picture in which he entitled it “Super Plumber.”
