Christopher Mintz-Plasse

“This is real life.”

That’s the supposed lesson presented during the first Kick-Ass as Dave Lizewski is beaten to within an inch of his life and later tortured and almost murdered by a horde of mafia goons who kill Big Daddy, a former cop turned vigilante and loving, yet terrible father.

The stakes are real, there are consequences to playing make-pretend superheroes — this is the message, but then all of that is undercut when Dave aids Big Daddy’s daughter, Hit Girl, in her quest for revenge. In the end, the pair soars high above New York City, on their way toward a “normal” life after killing the bad guy with a bazooka.

It’s an ending that is basted in cliche, but it fits as a cap to a fun and empty collection of over the top action scenes that are tied together by the thin thread of a paint by numbers script.

Kick-Ass didn’t light the world on fire with its box office receipts, bringing in just $48 million at the US box office and about the same through international markets, but it was well received and studios seemingly love to be in the comic book movie business, hence, a sequel was born.

‘Kick-Ass 2’ Early Reviews Are In

For the past few months, we’ve been seeing trailers, in some form or another, for the follow up to 2010’s Kick-Ass, titled Kick-Ass 2, naturally. I, like most people, have been pretty psyched to see what Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl have been up to, as well as how the “super group,” Justice Forever, comes to be. Well, I have good news! The Kick-Ass 2 reviews are in, and they’re… alright.

The overall consensus throughout each review is that the film doesn’t quite top its predecessor, despite being an enjoyable follow up. Digital Spy made the statement that “[f]ocusing on a movie’s strengths can be tough for any sequel that fails to live up to the expectation and hype,” characterizing the film as “diverting, if not fulfilling.Empire Online claim more of the same, calling Kick-Ass 2 a “more modest success” in regards to the first film, but praised the character of “The Mother Fucker” as “a pleasant surprise.“Meanwhile, Flickering Myth was a bit more positive with their review, stating:

Kick-Ass 2 is not, by any stretch of the imagination, your average superhero movie. The best thing about this movie is that is doesn’t have an ego. It is so utterly self-deprecating and self-aware that it’s hard not to love it… Meanwhile, in its simplicity it maintains a level of closeness with its audience that can’t be had with other, more fantastical superhero movies – and that for me is Kick-Ass 2’s greatest triumph.

which is one of the things most people enjoyed about the first film.

There has also been praise for the performances by stars Jim Carrey, Chloë Moretz, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse. Carrey, who’s shunned the movie for its emphasis on violence and firearms, is said to be “perfect in his role” of Colonel Stars and Stripes, while Moretz and Mintz-Plasse are said to have taken advantage of the opportunity to play deeper, more defined versions of their reprised roles. Although Aaron Taylor-Johnson has also been said to put on a decent performance in the role of the title character, Sci Fi Now reports the performance may have been bogged down by being “saddled with a Peter Parker journey that starts to drag as the film goes on.

The movie was quite possibly summed up best in Hey U Guys‘ review, when they made the comment:

Though riddled with issues – and not quite as ingenious as the first – it makes for incredibly fun viewing, and as such ensures that it doesn’t always have to be taken at face value.

While I was hoping for something even better than the first, I may have just gotten my own hopes a bit too high, and I don’t think it would be a mistake to check it out. As a huge Chloë Moretz and Jim Carrey fan, as well as a fan of the first film and over-the-top violence, I think this movie has enough going for it to force an end to my Twin Peaks marathon, so that I can get off my lazy ass and go be entertained by Kick-Ass 2 when it comes out on the 16th.

Miller and Kristen Wiig.

Take a look and let us know what you think in the comments section below. The movie hits theater screen next summer on June 20th, 2014.

Mark Millar‘s Kick-Ass was a violent and humorously dark look into the world of costumed heroes. The Sequel, Kick-Ass 2 looks to be every bit the thrill ride the first movie was and more. More action, more heroes, more villains, and 100% more dogs biting bad guys in the nuts.

I’m ready for Millar to get serious and get his graphic novel The Pro onto the big screen, that would be a hoot. If you haven’t read The Pro, I suggest you get out to your local comic book shop and pick it up. It’s not something you’ll want to give to your mother for Mother’s Day, but it’s a fantastically farcical look at what happens when a hooker gains superpowers.

Take a look at the trailer below and let us know what you think, will Jim Carey steal the show? Will Hit-Girl make the cheer-leading squad?

Inspired by Kick-Ass (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), other masked heroes appear. One such, Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey), forms a team and Kick-Ass joins them on patrol, while Hit-Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) “retires”, and tries to have a normal life. Meanwhile Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse)—reborn as The Mother Fucker—returns to play supervillain with his army, and exact revenge on Kick-Ass for his father’s death.

*Generic “Kick-Ass” related pun.

With August 16th quickly approaching, the release of Kick-Ass 2 is all most upon us. In anticipation, MTV takes  us behind the scenes with the stars of the film. Featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloe Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Jim Carrey, this behind-the-scenes featurette gives us a look at super heroes and super villain lairs. Check it out below:

According to Moretz fans of Kick-Ass will “see this new evolution of Mindy Macready and Dave Lizewski” that expands on the relationship of the crime-fighting duo. It’ll be interesting to see how it all pans out between the overlaying story lines of both Dave and Mindy, adjusting to working in a team and the rigors of dealing with High-school. If you’ve read the comic, you know that’s just the tip of the cock.

Update: Huh? The clip seems to have been removed. Sorry ’bout that. We’ll update ASAP.

Update #2: Complain on Twitter and dreams will come true. Don’t let anyone tell you differently. Many thanks to @Donnehh for this YouTube version.

You’ll watch this clip, and then, right when it starts gettin’ good, it’ll cut. Agh! The frustration of these teases! Still, it’s an excellent clip of what’s to come in Kick-Ass 2, releasing on June 28th. Honestly, it gave me goosebumps. The final showdown between the forces of good, led by Kick-Ass (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Hit-Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz), against the forces of evil, led by The Mother F%&*^r – yeah, ’cause that’s not a pain in the ass to type – (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), is going to be epic! Give it a watch,

Right?! I want to see those two square off so badly! And the fight between Kick-Ass and The Mother F%&*^r will be pathetically awesome, I can’t wait. This sequel is directed by Jeff Wadlow, and from the looks of this clip, I think fans of the first Kick-Ass as well as the comics will be quite happy. What do you guys think?

Look out Jim! Jeff Wadlow and Mark Millar‘s Kick-Ass 2 has released a green band trailer into the Internet Wild. The cursing and bloody violence might be toned down compared to the Red Band Trailer, but the action remains. We get a couple more looks at the villain “The Motherfucker” (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) and the group of evil league he assembles.

KICK-ASS 2 also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloë Grace Moretz, Jim Carrey, Morris Chestnut, John Leguizamo, and Donald FaisonKick-Ass 2 hits theaters on August 16th, 2013!

Kick-Ass, Hit Girl and Red Mist return for the follow-up to 2010’s irreverent global hit: ‘Kick-Ass 2.’ After Kick-Ass’ (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) insane bravery inspires a new wave of self-made masked crusaders, led by the badass Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey), our hero joins them on patrol. When these amateur superheroes are hunted down by Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse)—reborn as The Mother F%&*^r—only the blade-wielding Hit Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) can prevent their annihilation. When we last saw junior assassin Hit Girl and young vigilante Kick-Ass, they were trying to live as normal teenagers Mindy and Dave. With graduation looming and uncertain what to do, Dave decides to start the world’s first superhero team with Mindy.

Unfortunately, when Mindy is busted for sneaking out as Hit Girl, she’s forced to retire—leaving her to navigate the terrifying world of high-school mean girls on her own. With no one left to turn to, Dave joins forces with Justice Forever, run by a born-again ex-mobster named Colonel Stars and Stripes. Just as they start to make a real difference on the streets, the world’s first super villain, The Mother F%&*^r, assembles his own evil league and puts a plan in motion to make Kick-Ass and Hit Girl pay for what they did to his dad. But there’s only one problem with his scheme: If you mess with one member of Justice Forever, you mess with them all.

Did y’all catch the recent balls-to-wall trailer for Kick-Ass 2? If you didn’t, you can check it out by clicking HERE. The trailer is not for the faint of heart. Violence, vulgarity, a grown up Chloe Moretz (She aint no hit girl anymore, behold HOT GIRL) and a dog biting a man’s balls off… yeah, it’s F’N bitchin’! Cool, original, and completely bad-ass… I can’t wait to see this movie! Oh, and Jim Carrey, what a surprise he is as Colonel Stars; exuding a persona that’s so un-Jim Carrey like. If it wasn’t for his name being shown in the trailer, you’d have no idea it was him. Sometimes it’s easy to forget what a good actor he truly is; here’s a roll that reminds you of his ability.

So, when exactly is Kick-Ass being released to theaters? It is known us folks in the U.S. are getting it August 16th, but what about outside North America? Well, some countries can expect it almost 2 months in advance of the U.S. Oh, the jealousy is maddening! Here’s a full list of Global Sites and Release dates:

Argh! UK wins again (they’re always getting premier ahead of us)…like a whole month before the U.S. Guess I finally have reason to travel abroad.

Besides the release dates business, here’s a a charming pic featuring Christopher Mintz-Plasse (The Mother Fucker), Olga Kurkulina (Mother Russia), and Jim Carrey (Colonel Stars).

KICK-ASS 2 based on the comic book created by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. and is being directed by Jeff Wadlow. The film stars Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloë Moretz, Jim Carrey, Lyndsy Fonseca, Yancy Butler, Donald Faison, John Leguizamo, Lindy Booth, Olga Kurkulina, and Nicolas Cage makes a cameo.

UPDATE! Here’s the official poster!

Picking up not long after the events of the first Kick-Ass, Kick-Ass 2 sees our heroes in full on Justice League mode. As in, there’s a hell of a lot more of them! Joining Aaron Taylor-Johnson‘s Kick-Ass and Chloe Moretz‘s Hit-Girl are a whole string of new heroes led by Jim Carrey‘s Colonel Stars and Stripes. And, Christopher Mintz-Plasse is back for revenge as the new super villain, The Motherfucker, also with his own team of baddies. Kick-Ass 2 is gonna be a motherfuckin’ brawl!

No point in waiting, dive into the new Red Band trailer – meaning the best bits aren’t edited out – below,

And now also on YouTube, if you prefer,

The flick is set to cover the events of the Hit-Girl mini-series as well as the sequel comic, Kick-Ass 2, which translates to lots of Chloe Moretz kickin’ ass. Which I believe everyone wants, right? And what do you think of Carrey’s Colonel Stars and Stripes? He’s an amalgamation of two of the comic’s characters, and from what’s in the trailer this turn out to be one of Carrey’s best.

Kick-Ass 2 hits theatres August 16th!
