It didn’t take long for Disney to follow-up their live action Cinderella teaser the other day with the full trailer. There’s a lot of acting talent involved in this latest incarnation that includes Lily James as Ella, Cate Blanchett as the evil Step Mother, Richard Madden as the Prince, and Helena Bonham Carter as her Fairy God Mother. How do you think this will do at the box office? (more…)

The tale of Cinderella is a classic one. It’s been adapted and recycled a countless number of times and even for those that don’t enjoy one incarnation, there’s another waiting just around the bend. The latest is a live-action version being put together by Kenneth Branagh (Thor) and starring such familiar faces as Richard Madden (Game of Thrones), Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter and more. It’s a PG-rated family movie that’s sure to bring Cinderella’s story to a whole new audience. And now Disney has released a teaser trailer for the flick, so you can at least get a few-seconds-long look at what Branagh has put together. Scroll on for the teaser. (more…)

We’ve been following the development of Disney‘s latest live action update of a classic fairy tale and not simply because the Disney princesses are in. I don’t believe they were ever really out, but as our generation (the ones who grew up during Disney’s second animation renaissance) become adults the princesses are becoming more popular than ever. And that being said, the last few live action re-tellings of said princesses – Snow White, for instance  – have only been so-so. Sure, none of those live-action attempts at Snow White came from the House of Mouse, but their Alice in Wonderland was a bit of a letdown, too.

For Cinderella they’ve gone and hired Kenneth Branagh, and man, do I hope that makes all the difference. Not only has Branagh built a career out of making Shakespeare accessible to the masses, but he directed Thor, masterfully. Asgardian god/alien? That could have been a HUGE fuck-up in the hands of a lesser director.

Now Cinderella has officially begun filming, as announced by the press release you’ll find below the cut, and thanks to the D23 Twitter account we get our first look at Lily James as the titular princess,

The list of talented thespians with accents continues to grow for Kenneth Branagh‘s new take on Cinderella as Hayley Atwell has joined the company. The artist formally (and futurely) known as Captain America’s Peggy Carter, will join Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham CarterStellan Skarsgård, Sophie McShera, Holliday Grainger, Richard Madden (Game of Thrones), and Lily James.

So who will she play? Read the headline again!

But seriously, it was Atwell herself who broke the news of her new role in Harper’s Bazaar. “I am about to start filming Kenneth Branagh’s new movie, Cinderella, playing Cinderella’s biological mother at the beginning of the story, the embodiment of goodness and maternal love,” she wrote.

The new Cinderella will begin shooting this fall for a spring 2015 release date. James will play the title character with McShera and Grainger playing the wicked stepsisters, Blanchett playing the wicked stepmother, Madden as Prince Charming, and Carter as the Fairy Godmother.

As for Atwell, nerd fans will be able to see her next as Peggy Carter in the short film of the same name to be included with the Iron Man 3 Blu-ray, and in a cameo in the sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Cinderella is scheduled for release on March 13, 2015.

Extra!  Extra!  Another announcement from our mouse overlord about what we can expect from Disney’s movie-machine in the coming years.  This time around, two new projects have been added to the grand list of official release dates, Cinderella and a new ‘Phase 3’ project from Marvel.

First up, Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella has been getting quite a bit of hype this last week.  Despite still being in the casting phase, Disney has seen fit to put down a solid release date of March 13th, 2015.  Let’s hope that not too many sets catch on fire.

Secondly, and perhaps more interesting despite the annoyance it creates within me, another Phase 3 project without a name has been added to the steadily growing list of Phase 3 projects without names.

Phase 3, as it stands now, will begin with Ant-Man on November 6th, 2015.  From there, it will continue on May 6th, 2016 with an unnamed project.  The year after, there will be a May 5th movie, again unnamed.  The new project has been shoe-horned in two months after the second project, on July 8th, 2016.

Whether this means that Disney is just very confident that they can create two summer contenders in one year or not remains to be seen.  It’s also a possibility that the second film runs hot off the story of the first one, leading to a grander overarching story.  We can always hope.

If we at the NB find anything more about what to expect, we’ll let you know.  Until then, keep your fingers crossed for an official Doctor Strange announcement.

Thanks to ComingSoon for the heads-up.

Choosing to use her magic for good rather than evil, The Hollywood Reporter is, uh, reporting Helena Bonham Carter is joining Disney‘s and Kenneth Branagh‘s live-action Cinderella. I’ve been following the development of this fairy tale feature for some time and it’s good to see how nicely this cast is shaping up. Bonham Carter will be fairy godmothering Lily James‘s Cinderella, whose evil step-sisters are to played by Sophie McShera (Downton Abbey)and Holliday Granger (The Borgias). Cate Blanchet has been long attached as the wicked stepmother and only recently we learned Game of ThronesRichard Madden will play the prince. Huh? Wonder what freed up his schedule?

Shooting is expected to begin in London in the fall. The role of The Fairy Godmother will be larger than it was in Disney’s animated classic as Bonham Carter will be, “disguised as an old beggar who watches over Cinderella before revealing herself as the magical being she truly is.” Bonham Carter as an old beggar woman?! Why, I never! Obviously, this isn’t Bonham Carter’s first Disney gig. She played the Red Queen in 2010’s Alice in Wonderland, but here’s hoping this flick proves to be better. And her head not so freakishly large.

Are you at all excited for Disney’s Cinderella? What of Bonham Carter as The Fairy Godmother?

Surprisingly absolutely no one, Disney has confirmed via a press release that frontrunner Richard Madden will play the prince in their live-action adaptation of Cinderella. He’s joining Lily James as the titular princess, Cate Blanchet as the evil step-mother, and Kenneth Branagh as director. Looking at this talented line-up, I’m quite pleased.

And considering what Madden still has left to endure as Robb Stark in this season of Game of Thrones, getting to be the prince of a peaceful, Disney kingdom will be a well earned vacation. I can’t imagine his choosing to marry Cinderella will cause nearly as many problems as his decision to marry the Lady Talisa, amirite?

Has this casting made you any more excited for Cinderella?

The final piece has been found for Disney‘s live-action Cinderella, their princess. A role rumored have once gone to Emma Watson has been snagged by Downton Abbey‘s Lily James. The news came in this very short press release from Disney which simply stated,

Actress Lily James (Downton Abbey) has been cast as Cinderella in Disney’s upcoming live-action interpretation of the beloved classic tale. The film is being directed by Sir Kenneth Branagh and stars Cate Blanchett as the iconic evil stepmother.

Additional announcements regarding Cinderella are expected in the coming weeks.

I’m going to guess one of those other expected announcements is who will play Prince Charming. Current frontrunner is Game of Thrones‘ Richard Madden, a decision of which I highly approve. Kenneth Branagh is directing, and Cate Blanchet has been attached as the evil step-mother for ages.

James plays the fiesty and free-spirited niece of Lord Grantham on Downton, so having her scrub floors and be bullied by her step-sisters will be a change of pace. One I’m happy to see her tackle. Do you think James is the right choice to fill that glass slipper?
