Despicable Me

What’s the only thing more challenging than being a “Part 2” follow-up film to a wildly successful first film? Being a “Part 3,” of course. Minions, the new animated feature about everybody’s favorite capsule-shaped, overall-wearing, begoggled, bad-guy-serving, yellow-hued, strange-speaking, banana-loving… things, isn’t a “Part 3” in the strictest sense of the word. It’s actually a prequel, taking place “B.G.” – Before Gru, the original Despicable in the first two films, Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2 – but it is the third major motion picture in the Minions universe, and expectations have soared sky-high since the first film became an unexpected hit 5 years ago. Every day the internet produces an astounding amount of goodies and gems. Most hilarious, some amusing, but all worth at least a few seconds of your time. We here at Nerd Bastards try to bring you the best bits of news and nerdery the webz has to offer, with a bit of snark thrown in. But sometimes not everything makes the cut. Monday through Friday we’ll be bringing you our inbox leftovers, our forgotten bookmarks, the nerdy bits that simply slipped through the cracks. You can submit items to Nerdy Bits by emailing us at nerdybits@nerdbastards.com.

Not just another Spidey tee: This shirt comes with an honest-to-Crom ultrasonic motion sensor sewed into the back of the neck that can supposedly detect moving objects from up to 5 feet away. The “Spidey Sense” shirt will make its first public appearance at SDCC, but will not be available for purchase until October. [Fashionably Geek]

Got any friends who you think could be personally responsible for the unpleasant stereotype of nerds as poorly groomed? Fear not! This Integrated Circuit hairbrush by Think Geek is the perfect gift for the unkempt nerd in your life….Remember, it’s Comic-Con season: Our people are going to be all over the mundane news–let’s try to look presentable, eh? 😉 [Geeks Are Sexy]

Why?

Because deep down I’m still about six years old…

If you are too, you can order your own Zombie Boogers at the aptly named site Stupid.com–Enjoy! [Laughing Squid]

If you’re done with your good-natured chuckle over the Zombie Boogers, it’s time to soil yourself in abject terror. That is the Combat Alpha/Big Dog concept, and while it is supposedly ONLY a concept, it’s still gonna cost me a few night’s sleep. I mean we just found out our government (and I’m addressing American readers exclusively) has us under 24-hour surveillance…Bad enough when all we had to worry about was CIA spooks, now Big Brother can send in effing K-9 to waste anybody who gets on their bad side?

Canada is looking better and better. [Geekologie]

Twinkies.jpg

Hostess brought Twinkies back just in time for some creative individual to come up with these brilliant, and scrumptious-looking Minion cupcakes (as in Grue’s Minions from Despicable Me–if you’ve been living in a cave for the past couple years). This photo comes to us via Long Island radio station WALK 97.5

My only objection is that they all have two eyes….

Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn, the live-action webseries based on the immensely popular FPS franchise has been nominated for a Prime-time Emmy Award for Outstanding Main Title Design.

I’ll be honest here: I’ve never seen this series, mostly because I’m not a Halo player (I’m a Playstation man), but it’s hard NOT to be impressed by a webseries about a video game getting nominated for television’s highest honor–even if it is only a technical award.

Do you like playing Angry Birds on your mobile device? That’s nice. Well how about going to your local multiplex to see Angry Birds the Movie? Before you say anything – too late! – it’s already in development.

The epic three year battle between the eponymous splenetic fowl and their arch-nemesis the pigs (yeah, I don’t get it either) will soon be translated to the big screen courtesy of producer John Cohen (Despicable Me) and executive producer David Maisel (Iron Man). Rovio Entertainment, the developer behind Angry Birds the game, will be making the film in house under its new animation banner that they hired Maisel to shepherd last year.

Cohen, meanwhile, brings considerable animation experience with him to the film. At Fox he worked under the Blue Sky shingle and helped develop hits like Ice Age, Robots, and Horton Hears a Who before going to Universal and producing the hit Despicable Me. So I’m sure he’s more than capable of developing some kind of narrative out of the game. Otherwise the plot will go something like this.

When a bunch of pigs do… something… somebody gets their sling shot and fires birds at them. But, you know angry birds. And sometimes they have powers. Or are Star Wars themed. Uh, the end.

Angry Birds is looking to be released in theaters sometime in 2016, when either we’ve all gotten over it or it will be as ubiquitous as computer solitaire.

I wouldn’t say Universal Picture’s Despicable Me is in the upper echelon of great animated kid flicks, but it was sappy, cute and funny enough to make $540 million and become the 10th-biggest animated motion picture in U.S. history. I guess, yellow skinned, happy-go-lucky, nugget men is all it takes to sell a picture these days.

Anyhow, Despicable Me was a cash-cow, so naturally a sequel is in the works.

Chris Meledandri and his acclaimed filmmaking team create an all-new comedy animated adventure featuring the return of Gru (Steve Carell), the girls, the unpredictably hilarious minions…and a host of new and outrageously funny characters. Despicable Me 2 is scheduled for theatrical release on July 3rd, 2013.

Here’s a trailer featuring those yellow skinned, happy-go-lucky, nugget men (minions) singing, in their wacky little language, The Beach Boy’s “Barbara Ann”:

Uh, did the punchy one say “Potato”? Hehe, I love these guys!

Where’s Waldo? On the Big Screen of Course

There have been many greats in the game of “hide and seek”: children,  the snitch from Harry Potter, Osama Bin Laden. None greater however, then Wally Waldo, better known as the beloved character of the Where’s Waldo children books. Each giant book contained double-page spread illustrations depicting dozens of crazy characters, with the single minded goal to find a guy wearing a red and white striped shirt and round, Harry Potter glasses. The original hipster.

Let’s be honest, Waldo is a pain in the ass to find, but when you do… it’s like you’ve hit the jackpot. Film studio MGM is hoping for a jackpot of it’s own, purchasing the rights to develop the children books into a live action film franchise.

LOS ANGELES, CA (November 07, 2011) – MGM’s President of Motion Picture Group Jonathan Glickman today announced that the studio has secured feature film rights to bring Classic Media’s Where’s Waldo?® to the big screen in a live-action family adventure.

Created by Martin Handford and first published in 1987, Where’s Waldo? is one of the most recognizable characters in the world and a pop-culture icon. A publishing phenomenon with more than 55 million books sold worldwide from New York to Sydney to London to Tokyo, Where’s Waldo books are available in more than thirty-eight countries and have been translated into more than thirty languages. Where’s Waldo has also been spotted in gaming, selling more than 4.6+ million Apps for iPhone and iPad.

“We are thrilled to be bringing the search for Waldo to the big screen. Along with our partners at Classic Media, we look forward to making a worldwide adventure that will appeal to Where’s Waldo? fans of all ages,” Glickman said.

“Waldo is the most searched-for character in the world,” said Eric Ellenbogen, co-CEO, Classic Media. “With thanks to MGM, fans everywhere will find Waldo in movie theaters with his motion picture debut.”

MGM’s Cassidy Lange, Vice President, Production, will oversee the project for the studio with Ellenbogen and Handford’s business partner Mike Gornall serving as Executive Producers.

I have high hopes for Waldo and his friends Wizard Whitebeard, twin sisters Wilma and Wenda and his dog Woof (who’ll most likely be cgi). It still questionable as to what could happen in a Where’s Waldo film, since all you did as a reader (there was no reading) was just look for Waldo.

Our first Nerdy Bit is sad news for us all. Looks like the rapture wasn’t a a complete pile of crap. Besides Randy Savage another was taken from us, legendary comic book writer/artist, Frank Miller (pictured above). His partney Kimberly Cox tweeted,

I went to check on Frank and he was happily inking at his drawing table around 5:45… I came back after 6 PM and I don’t understand? Why?
