Nothing says redundant, unnecessary, and unneeded like a beat-for-beat, (nearly) shot-for-shot remake of a beloved animated classic like the faux-live-action (re) iteration of Disney’s beloved, 1994 animated classic, The Lion King. Since its premiere twenty-five years ago, The Lion King has become a permanent pop-culture fixture, passed on from generation to generation as one of – if not, the – highlights of Disney’s animation renaissance. Like practically ever Disney film-turned –classic, it’s become a self-perpetuating brand of its own, expanding to straight-to-video sequels, animated TV series, and a Broadway musical that’s become the highest grossing musical of all time. In short, we didn’t need a faux-live-action remake of a classic, maybe just a re-release or even a big-screen, old school animated sequel. For the Disney Industrial Complex eager to exploit its back catalog of animated classics, a live-action (or faux-live-action) version of The Lion King was all but inevitable. Just because you can, though, doesn’t mean you should. The bland, dull, ultimately soporific result, however, suggests that for once, the Disney Industrial Complex erred badly. (more…)
Most fans of Star Wars felt that the force was strong with the newest installment Solo: A Star Wars Story when they heard that Donald Glover was taking on the role of Lando Calrissian. Until that moment no one believed anyone could step into the shoes of Colt 45 ad man, Billie Dee Williams. The film isn’t even out yet, but word is that Lando will soon have his own film. (more…)
If there was a superhero success story above all others in the last several years, it was Deadpool. The X-Men movie spin-off about the smart alec mutant mercenary was shelved at 20th Century Fox and deemed to risky for the studio due to its outlandish mix of graphic violence and meta-comedy that would require a big-budget and an R-rating; the kiss of death in other words. One year later though, Deadpool is a franchise of his own and because of that the studio that once thought the Merc with the Mouth unbankable is now banking on him. Get ready for Deadpool: Animated. With the success of Rogue One, everyone is already looking forward to the next anthology film, the Untitled Han Solo film. While we all know that actor Alden Ehrenreich will be filling in Harrison Ford’s big shoes, all eyes are on Donald Glover, who will be replacing Billy Dee Williams as Han’s “old buddy” Lando Calrissian. Glover, who is Hollywood’s “it man” right now, fresh off his show Atlanta as well as his rap career as Childish Gambino also surging, everyone’s excited about the next Star Wars movie. Recently both Billy Dee and Donald Glover met over lunch for the first time for a nice chat. Williams recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about his meeting with Glover and his thoughts on him.
You might have felt a disturbance in the Force this morning as director Chris Miller dug deep to announce the beginning of production on Han Solo A Star Wars Story with a classic Han Solo pun. The spin-off movie stars Alden Ehrenreich (Han Solo), Woody Harrelson (Garris Shrike?), Donald Glover (Lando Calrissian), and Amelia Clarke in an unrevealed role. We can only hope that this first bit of pun-ery will continue in the movie itself. Han Solo was often very funny in the Star Wars movies after all. Check out the announcement below. (more…)
It was just a short while ago that Donald Glover‘s (Community) name had been dropped as a front-runner to play a young Lando Calrissian in the Star Wars Han Solo Spin-off. At the time, most shrugged it off as an Internet rumor. Glover himself even acknowledged it saying ” Yep. There are rumors”. Turns out, he was playing coy, and the Internet, in its Magic 9-ball knowledge, got this one right. Star Wars.com confirmed, that yes, Glover will playing smooth-talking smuggler, Lando Calrissian.
You hear that? That’s the sound of a billion nerds jizzing themselves in unison.
Lando Calrissian is one of the Star Wars Original Trilogy’s (OT) unique characters. When first introduced to us in Empire Strikes Back, he was the somewhat untrustworthy “friend” of Han Solo who is the administrator of Bespin, the cloud city. Ultimately Lando betrays his longtime buddy to The Empire getting Han Solo encased in carbonite and on his way to Jabba The Hutt via Boba Fett (God Empire was so awesome!). After he reluctantly betrays his friend and their rebel compatriots, he makes amends and tries to rescue him, showing the audience that he did have a good heart. He gets the ultimate redemption in Return of the Jedi when he leads the assault on the Second Death Star and ends of being the hero who destroys the Empire’s weapon. While many of the OT cast and characters returned for The Force Awakens, Lando was noticeably missing, upsetting some fans. While there are some rumors that he may appear in the next Star Wars sequel, that doesn’t mean he’s completely missing from further adventures of the Star Wars Universe. Recently a young Lando showed up on Star Wars Rebels. Now it looks like we’ll see Young Lando somewhere else.
Word is making the Internet rounds that Donald Glover (Community, The Martian) is in early talks to join the cast of Marvel and Sony‘s upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming. Tom Holland made his first appearance as the new Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War alongside Iron-Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Captain America (Chris Evans), which placed Spider-man firmly in the Marvel Universe. Glover has ties to the Spider-Man mythos, he was an Internet favorite to play Ultimate’s Spider-Man Miles Morales, if the character ever made it to the big screen. He eventually voiced that character in the animated Ultimate Spider-Man series. What character might he play in Spider-Man: Homecoming? (more…)
You might recall an enthusiastic push from fans prior to the casting of Andrew Garfield as The Amazing Spider-Man to give the role to Community co-star Donald Glover. You might even remember Glover egging that campaign on, and wearing Spider-Man pajamas in the second season premiere of Community. True, Glover didn’t get the part, but when the nerd gods close a door, they also open a window. And with that, we get the news that Glover has been cast to give voice to Ultimate universe Spidey Miles Morales in the new season of the Disney XD series Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors. (The series is being re-named for its third season.) (more…)
Stop putting it out there, stop reading it, stop writing it, and stop eating it up with a shovel.
There’s an episode of South Park (naturally) that strikes the nail with great ferocity and accuracy and charm. Britney Spears has shot her face off, but yet she is still thrown out to the lions and the hordes. They rip her to shreds, but the triumph is brief. The cult must have more self-proclaimed virgin blood, and so they move on to Miley Cyrus.
This was five years ago and it has proven prophecy as Cyrus’ every move is now monitored, her every action debated and labeled as bold or bizarre. She’s a slut, she’s a feminist, she’s crazy, she’s smart. We can’t make up our minds, but she is, undoubtedly, #1 in our hearts and #1 in our cross-hairs. (more…)
