This is hardly the first time the name of Oscar-nominated actor Joaquin Phoenix (Her, Walk The Line, Gladiator, SpaceCamp…yes, he was the kid in SpaceCamp) has been whispered in conjunction with a comic book film:
Just prior to San Diego Comic-Con 2010, the rumor mill had Phoenix replacing Edward Norton as Bruce Banner in The Avengers–a role that eventually went to Mark Ruffalo. More recently, there was talk that Warner Bros. was eyeing him for the role of Lex Luthor in Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, but decided to go with Jesse Eisenberg instead.
Today we have an exclusive from The Wrap suggesting that Phoenix’s people are currently in talks regarding the lead role in Doctor Strange–according to “multiple individuals close to the casting”, for whatever that’s worth. Follow me after the jump for more info, and the laundry list of other prospective “Doctors Strange”: (more…)
Welcome back to another exciting episode of “Who the heck is going to be appearing in that darned Doctor Strange movie?” This time around, it appears as if actor Edgar Ramirez may end up somewhere among the cast. Read on for all the info on the why and where of it. (more…)
From the “remakes no one asked for” file, comes news tonight that Edgar Ramirez is replacing Gerard Butler in the remake of the 90s surfer heist movie Point Break. Ramierez will star along side Luke Bracey in this new version of the film about disenfranchised surfers robbing banks to flip the bird to the system, and the lone, conflicted FBI agent, improbably named Johnny Utah, who’s not sure he wants to bring them to justice. Who the villain will be in J.J. Abrams’ sequel to 2009’s Star Trek is the question on everyone’s lips. Well, anyone whose eagerly anticipating this sequel, which is all of us, right? Good. First we heard Benicio Del Toro was to be cast and possibly playing well-loved nemesis, Khan Noonien Singh. Then Abrams assured us he was NOT playing Khan and finally Del Toro turned down the project all together.
So where’s that leave us? Alive Eve and Peter Weller have been the most recent and high profile additions yet there’s still no word on a villain. Granted we also have no clue where the sequel will take the intrepid Enterprise crew but a villain would be a giant hint as to their proposed direction. If they do indeed have their sights set on casting a new Khan it would make sense for them to keep looking Latin actors.
Well look at this, wouldn’t you know it, actor Édgar Ramírez (Carlos, Che, Domino, The Bourne Ultimatum) is believed to be the frontrunner for Star Trek 2‘s villian. And guess what!? As if the name didn’t give it away. Ramírez is a Latin actor, hailing from Venezuela, making him just what they’d be looking for in a young Ricardo Montalbon. Variety is reporting Ramírez will have a screen test soon, via Skype of all things, and after that we’ll have some kind of announcement.
Do you think it’s a sure thing Khan will be the villain of Star Trek 2? Seems likely with the actors their seeking, but I still believe an all new, original villain would be the way to go.
