Ethan Hawke

Ethan Hawke has a varied and eclectic career. He’s been in direct-to-DVD films to blockbuster hits. He has a unique view on film making as an art and as a business. After Hawke commented on superhero movies he left fans divided. Insulting one of the most well-loved superhero movies in recent years, which is saying something with the number of movies the genre has had, put a bad taste in a lot of fans mouths. Twitter lit up, both coming to Hawke’s defense and trolling him – hard. Was he right? Or is he too out of touch with the average Joe to know why they like what they like?

Hollywood is always in a state of flux and nothing is guaranteed until the contract ink dries. (Some times not even then) So when word swept the Internet that Joaquin Phoenix was in the late stage of talks to take on Marvel‘s Sorcerer Supreme Doctor Strange, many of us thought that he’d be a great casting choice, but now Marvel’s going to have to scratch Phoenix’s name of their Doctor Strange list. Who is stranger? Ethan Hawke or Joaquin Phoenix? This may be the choice now before Marvel Studios and comic book fans as a new name has appeared in the race to play the next, great Marvel superhero: Doctor Strange. It was barely a month ago that is seemed like Phoenix had the whole thing sewn up, but today we have rumors that the Boyhood star has cut in and become such a sensation with the studio that he’s all but assured to take on the part of the Sorcerer Supreme and Master of the Mystic Arts. So is Phoenix really now off the casting sheet? Is Hawke now the one to beat, and how much does past experience with facial hair play into the casting decision? (more…)

I apologize for the bulimia joke in that headline. I am a bad person.

The first Purge movie didn’t actually feature any of the “chaos in the streets” its premise promised, which was my main complaint with the movie as a whole. Other than that, I kind of enjoyed the Ethan Hawke centered home invasion tale, even if I couldn’t figure out why, if all crime is legal for twelve hours, his family’s attackers still felt the need to wear masks (answer: apparently producer Michael Bay thought they’d “look cool”). Thankfully, the second installment in this new franchise seems to be doing away with the single setting and is throwing none other than Frank Grillo (who can also be seen kicking ass and taking names as Crossbones in Captain America: The Winter Solider next week) out into this desolate landscape on a vengeful mission.
