Looking at the live action Batman movies of the last-quarter century we’ve had eight different movies starring five different actors as the Dark Knight Detective and his alter ego billionaire Bruce Wayne. That may be why for a generation of people, the only real definitive Batman is the man behind the voice behind the cowl, Kevin Conroy, who first “appeared” as the Caped Crusader in 1992 when Batman: The Animated Series premiered on Fox Kids. Conroy was one of a number of celebrity guests as the recent Fan Expo Canada in Toronto, and at a press event he talked about his Batman legacy, and why no one person is the definitive Dark Knight. Arguably one of the most shocking moments from Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens was the heartbreaking revelation that one of the galaxies most cherished romances, the star-crossed love between Han Solo and Leia Organa , had come to an end (off screen no less!) Ok, maybe not as shocking as Kylo Ren, the movie’s big black cloaked emo bad guy, being their son or his eventual patricide (we can openly talk about Han Solo being killed in the movie, right? The statute of limitations on it as a spoiler has to be up and besides, talking about it will help us all heal…)
Nearly a year after the film’s release fans are still left to wonder what ended the marriage between a smuggler and a
princess general. Well, wonder no more! This weekend at the Saskatoon Comic & Entertainment Expo, headlining guest Carrie Fisher revealed the root cause of the relationships demise to a packed house. When asked what lead to the termination of their marital alliance, Fisher gave this (most likely non-canon) explanation: (more…)
Half the fun of any comic con is the wide variety of cosplay you can see on a given day. Sure, there are a lot of regulars like Spider-Man, Deadpool, and the Joker, but the truly creative set themselves apart with elaborate recreations of anime or video game characters, variant costumes and mash-ups, even Mr. Sparkle. Yes, we did find a Mr. Sparkle at Fan Expo Canada. We even found a Banjo Tooie, the Belle of the Belles, and the Marvel Knights team-up of Daredevil and Black Panther. In the couples category, we encountered the Penguin and a Jedi, and the saddest looking married couple in Westeros (in season 2 anyway). Submitted for your enjoyment, here’s some of the great cosplay from the first two days of Fan Expo! (more…)
When you think of comic book conventions, the first thing that most likely comes to mind is the one and only Comic Con in San Diego California. After all, it is the biggest comic con of the year and you can find many big stars and major announcements there. But what about the smaller conventions? You know, the local ones that not nearly as many people go to. While these smaller comic conventions aren’t as popular as the ones that coast an entire savings account to go to, they are nonetheless worthy of checking out. A perfect example of a small con with a big heart is last weekend’s Terrificon Comicon at the Mohegan Sun resort and casino in Uncasville, Connecticut. (more…)
It’s a Pokemon world, we’re just living in it! The debut of Pokemon Go on smart phones everywhere last month became a smash hit and cultural sensation, but the fact of the matter is that Pokemon has been part of kids’ pop culture diet for two decades now; it transverses generations. A big part of that is Veronica Taylor, who that first generation of Pokemon fans will recognize as the voice of Ash, and the voice of Ash’s mom, in the English dub of the Pokemon anime that ran for eight seasons and several movies in the late 90s/early 00s.
Taylor’s credits include a long list of animated shows from both sides of the Pacific Ocean. You can hear her in the 2003 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series as April O’Neal, or as Scarlett in the anime G.I. Joe: Sigma 6. Taylor’s credits also includes Slayers, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Mobile Suit Gundam, and the latest dub of Sailor Moon. You can also hear her vocal talents reading books written by Judy Blume, Danielle Steel, and Mary Kay Andrews, and in video games like Ape Escape 2, Grand Adventure, and World of Warcraft. Today though, the topic of discussion was Pokemon, and the legacy that Taylor has helped sew as we countdown the days to Fan Expo Canada in Toronto, where Taylor will reunite with many of the people that have made Pokemon, and continue to make it, the success that it is. Although Captain Marvel is still without a director, Meg LeFauve (Inside Out) and Nicole Perlman (Guardians of The Galaxy), are currently working on the script for her solo film. Marvel has always planned to have an actress lined up in case of an earlier appearance in a film such as the anticipated Avengers: Infinity War Part I.
A while back it was reported, Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson (United States of Tara, Community, Trainwreck) was in negotiations for the lead role. Now, thanks to an unveiling at San Diego Comic Con, it is 100% confirmed that Brie Larson is the one and only Captain Marvel. (more…)
Marvel Studios had us scared there for a minute. As the presentation got underway in Hall H at San Diego Comic Con there came rumblings on the internet that those of us stuck at home would have to without seeing any of the goodies. And then a little while ago, the studio dropped a bomb known as the second trailer for Doctor Strange on us and all’s forgiven. If you thought the world of Strange was magically fantastical in trailer number one, you haven’t seen anything yet with trailer number two, which shows Strange in training and offers a look at the extent of the villainy he will face.
