Finnick Odair

Sam Claflin.

Wait, who? Okay, so not the most famous name up for the part. Still, Claflin has experience in big franchises already in his brief career. He was the guy in love with the mermaid in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and he was Prince William, the other guy in Snow White and the Huntsman. This latest, very important, casting news about The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire was made via the Lionsgate Twitter account.

It was then followed up with this press release:

Lionsgate and the filmmakers of THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE are pleased to announce that Sam Claflin has been cast in the role of Finnick in the much anticipated film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ worldwide smash hit novel Catching Fire. Charasmatic and clever, Finnick was a District 4 Hunger Games victor when he was fourteen.

After breaking out in his role as the romantic lead in last year’s PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES, Claflin starred in the box office smash SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN playing Prince William alongside Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth. He recently finished filming THE QUIET ONES opposite Jarred Harris, and MARY & MARTHA, in which he co-stars with Hilary Swank.

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE will be directed by Francis Lawrence, and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. The novel on which the film is based is the second in a trilogy that has sold more than 50 million books in print and digital in the U.S. alone.

Lionsgate will release THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE on November 22, 2013.

So what say you, Bastards? Claflin: Yay or nay?

Lionsgate hasn’t found the “perfect” Finnick Odair for their film adaptation of Catching Fire just yet, but some names are being thrown around right now as potential whores tributes.

Sources are saying that the three potentials are Armie Hammer, Taylor Kitsch and Garrett Hedlund, although the studio may also be considering some unknowns for the part.  What we do know for sure, however, is that Robert Pattinson is not in the running regardless of whatever rumors are being bandied about.  In any case, chances are we’ll hear about the official casting decision now long from now, and we’ll all rest easy knowing which actor will be wielding a trident in the next film.

Catching Fire will hit theaters on November 22, 2013 and filming will start in the fall of this year.

Who would you rather see portraying the District 4 victor?  I guess it doesn’t matter unless the dude has got “incredible green eyes” or whatever the hell it says in the books.

Rumor has it that Twilight‘s Robert Pattinson is in the running to take on The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire role of Finnick Odair, a former tribute with an eye for the ladies, who gets dragged into the Third Quarter Quell (When the Hunger Games tributes are made up of previous winners).
It’s pretty much what you would expect from an Internet rumor, there is the flimsy connection that Water For Elephants collaborator Francis Lawrence is now filling the Catching Fire director’s chair, the upcoming end of the Twilight Saga that leaves Pattinson free for other projects, and there is the Hollywood marketing hope of merging the Twilight and Hunger Games rabid fan-bases.

What do you think, can Pattinson pull off the outrageous character of Finnick? If not who would you cast in the role?
