gremlins 2 the new batch

Gremlins

Apparently Hollywood has been working on a remake of seminal holiday-horror classic Gremlins for years now. Perhaps my subconscious mind has switched to an autonomous mode of denial simply bypassing such desecrating thoughts, preventing a system overload after the deluge of information regarding Paul Feig‘s reboot of Ghostbusters, which already melted my noggin. On the other hand, perhaps they’re just planning on remaking everything that has nostalgic value from the 80’s and it simply didn’t register in my brain amidst the copious other announcements of reboots of 80’s franchises. One thing is sure, nothing is sacred anymore, so you’re going to have to be prepared for the worst, because it seems originality has become somewhat less profitable these days. (more…)

With literally everything in the 80s seemingly being remade or rebooted, it was only a matter of time before we got around to Gremlins. The 1984 classic directed by Joe Dante and producer Steven Spielberg got one 1990 sequel before going dark for the next 22 years. But it’s a cult classic, with name cache, so obviously someone’s going to want to cash in on that. And the time is now according to Vulture.

The website is reporting that Warner Bros. executives are looking to get Spielberg’s blessing to get rolling on a new Gremlins. Dante himself has been wanting to make another Gremlins for a while, but working with Dante isn’t exactly ideal for Warners from a business point of view. He’s not really a dynamo at the box office, and his last film sat on the shelf for three years. Also, Spielberg’s going to have his own ideas, which might be why Warners wants to just get his approval and proceed (even though Spielberg did write the storyline for the original before passing scripting duties to Chris Columbus).

So aside from the who might take the reins of this new Gremlins question, it will surely plague the nerdy as to what a new Gremlins might look like too. Meaning will the potential filmmaker of a potential third Gremlins movie embrace CG creatures, revisit old school animatronic, or some combination there of? Of course, that’s if Warners is able to get fans past the initial gag reflex of hating any and all remakes.

More news as it develops.
