It’s been more than 27 years since the last Gremlins film. The original horror comedy which focused on cute little Gizmo, when after breaking the 3 main rules unleashed Gremlins, the pesky troublesome creatures that caused all sorts of havoc on Kingston Falls in the original film, and in New York City in the sequel. While the sequel was not as successful as the original, fans still wanted to see more of this world. For years many have wondered if there would ever be a sequel to the franchise. It looks like, after all these years, we have an update.
You don’t even need to have seen the classic 1984 horror comedy Gremlins to know what the three basic rules are when it comes to handling the cheeky little critters. It has become such an ingrained part of western culture that you can safely assume that anyone who doens’t know it sends most of their waking time living somewhere under rocks, completely shut away from society. Don’t expose them to bright light. Don’t get them wet. And never feed them after midnight. It’s simple enough stuff, when you think about it, and there’s really no reason to break those rules – especially once you know what will happen if you do. (more…)
If there will be a lingering fallout to the overwhelming success of Jurassic World, it won’t be a coming glut of dinosaur films at the multiplex, but a number of films that aren’t reboots of beloved franchises, but continuations. Jurassic World is an example of nostalgia done right, and if it can work for one Steven Spielberg property, then why can’t it work for another? For a long time now, there’s been significant effort to reboot Gremlins, but now the powers that be are looking at the success of Jurassic World and saying, What might Billy and Gizmo be up to 30 years after the original? If you’ve ever wondered how the majority of sequels get knocked off track and can’t hold a candle to the original, then this video from Key & Peele will help you put all the pieces together. “It’s called brainstorming, not brain drizzling, sweet pea,” intones Star Magic Jackson, Jr (Peele) as he waxes fabulous to Key’s spot-on Joe Dante. Comedy maestros Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele take a stab at Hollywood’s questionable sequel-making process in this bit. For a taste of some killer movie making riffing, hit the jump.
Hollywood’s retro-love is still in full swing, even if it takes some projects a little longer than others to complete the process from concept to completion. Long-time writer and director Chris Columbus is out on the press tour for his new movie, Pixels, that opens this week (look for my review at Noon EDT Wednesday here on the site), and he gave us media types a little more info on where the reboots of two major 1980s products – Goonies and Gremlins – stand.
It’s been 30 years since Gremlins came into theaters. Having style, charm, originality and humor to spare, this film was among the top echelon of movies from the glorious ’80’s. With Gizmo in our hearts, flawed rules to follow, and humorous but equally terrifying ill tempered satanic spawns, Gremlins has forever cemented itself as a staple in popular culture.
So what does Hollywood want to do? Reboot it, of course! And just to throw salt in the wound, a Goosebumps writer has been pegged to scribe it. (more…)
Apparently Hollywood has been working on a remake of seminal holiday-horror classic Gremlins for years now. Perhaps my subconscious mind has switched to an autonomous mode of denial simply bypassing such desecrating thoughts, preventing a system overload after the deluge of information regarding Paul Feig‘s reboot of Ghostbusters, which already melted my noggin. On the other hand, perhaps they’re just planning on remaking everything that has nostalgic value from the 80’s and it simply didn’t register in my brain amidst the copious other announcements of reboots of 80’s franchises. One thing is sure, nothing is sacred anymore, so you’re going to have to be prepared for the worst, because it seems originality has become somewhat less profitable these days. (more…)
While the magical, nightmarish gremlins from the eponymous film Gremlins and its sequel might live to spawn another day to wreak havoc on Kingston Falls and the rest of the world, don’t expect their creator Joe Dante to be any part of their continuing chaos. Talk of a reboot or a sequel to the 1984 and 1990 films has been tossed around for years like so much errant water on a mogwai. Now with names such as the original film’s director Richard Donner (Superman) and producer Chris Columbus (Goonies, Home Alone) attached to a possible new Gremlins film, everyone just assumed that Dante would return to rein in the chaotic world he helped create. Not so, he says. Instead, he ruminated with The Playlist about the trials and tribulations involved in getting film about the metamorphic imps out of the cocoon. (more…)
Did you ever stare at Billy’s crotch on the original poster for Gremlins? Well some guy did, and in doing so, revealed an Easter egg fans of the film probably never noticed. What is it? Well, you’re gonna have to read on through to find out, but first, let us take a moment and reflect on Joe Dante’s classic film, with a few fun facts thrown in along the way. We’ve even got a 30 years later cast photo!
It’s almost surprising that we don’t hear more news about the studio pushing a remake of Gremlins, it’s only one of the most popular and well-known films from the 80s. That, and I’m pretty sure they’ve remade or rebooted just about everything else from the era. With last week’s news that Warner Bros was fast-tracking a Goonies follow-up comes an accompanying word that another film based on the Steven Spielberg-produced 1984 hit would be joining it in a theater near you, in the near future.
