Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters

Hansel-and-Gretel-Witch-Hunters

Tommy Wirkola did a great job directing Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. The movie was full of action packed fun and the stars, Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, had great chemistry on screen, but somehow it never captured the American movie going audience’s attention .

Renner’s run with The Avengers and  The Bourne Legacy were thought by the producers, to be a draw for the re-imagined fairy tale, but instead, Witch Hunters got panned by critics and grossed at what best could be called modest $205 million dollars in worldwide box office earnings. So what we can only conclude was a drunken sugar binge decision by Paramount and MGM, a Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters sequel is on the way.

The decision for a sequel may be due to the film reaching the $200 million dollar mark, but Deadline has confirmed that a number of the film’s producers expected a much bigger return, producers including Beau Flynn, comedian Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and Kevin Messick. Currently there’s no plot , no title, and no time-frame for shooting the sequel, and even the return of writer-director Wirkola and stars Jeremy and Gemma are still up in the air. Seeing as the film didn’t do as good as their respective studios thought it would, the idea of doing sequel might be a bit of a turn off for the film’s stars.

Perhaps they can still pull it off when the movie is released and profits from the Blu-ray and DVD sales are added to the mix. Until then it’s best to keep an open mind, but this could easily end up as a straight to DVD feature starring Thomas Mann‘s sidekick character before you know it.

The release of Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters is just over three weeks away and the international marketing team is spamming us with some more footage.  Two new TV trailers, courtesy of Russia, have just hit the airwaves and we have them here for you.  Enjoy!

Here is the first:

And the other one:

Looks pretty, but it might be better to watch the film in Russian as well, considering we can probably expect little more than what we see in these trailers.

Feel free to check out the entire film when it releases on our side of the world come January 25th.

Thanks to ComingSoon for the heads-up.

‘Hansel and Gretel’ Gets a Rating

Paramount has seen fit to make an adaptation of the old folk tale Hansel and Gretel, but with an edgier twist.  It’s called Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters and it stars Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as the titular characters, though a bit older than most might remember them from childhood stories.

These sorts of movies tend to bounce back and forth between the “R” and the “PG-13” ratings as producers decide whether or not they want to appeal to a wider, younger audience or just stick with some serious blood, guts and violence.  Often this struggle ends with the more family-friendly (and thus watered-down) version making the grade, which can spell disaster.  Just watch the atrocity that is 2004’s Van Helsing if you don’t believe me.

Reports say that Paramount has decided to take the grittier “R” route, so it looks like Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters will be getting the full treatment.  Expect witches to be dying in proper fashion with an appropriate amount of gore.  Who knows, there may even be some boobies thrown in as a bonus!

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters is currently set to release at the beginning of next year on January 11th.

Thanks to slashfilm for the heads-up.

The action-adventure horror film Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, which is based on the popular fairy tale, has been delayed for almost a year. Paramount have pushed the film out of its Autumn “to be determined” release slot and all the way back to 2013.

Oh… sad face. Seriously, I was looking forward to this flick, A) I got a man crush on Jeremy Renner, and B) classic fairy tales re-imagined in some ridiculous modern way always put a dumb smile on my face.

H&G: Witch Hunters is a re-imagining of the dark classic story. It explores what happened to Hansel and Gretel 15 years after the gingerbread house incident. They have become bounty hunters that specialize in tracking down and killing witches!

Sounds bad-ass, right? Now we got to sit on my hands and wait…a fucking year! Phooey!

On a side note. Anybody watching ABC’s Once Upon a Time? Anyone else clap their hands like a SPED when Emma became sheriff? Just me then? OK….

Over the weekend, two “first look” images popped up online. One for Clash of the Titans 2, the other for Hansel and Gretel. Below you will find both, along with some commentary.

Call me a new age nansy pansy, but I have an ear-to-ear smile when classic fairy tales get re-imagined in some ridiculous modern way. Such as the case with NBC’s Grimm and ABC’s Once Upon a Time, which I am lovin’ the shit out of.  What can I say, my cynicism is defenseless against “everything old is new again” type stuff (Remakes and re-imaginings are two very diffrent things), especially any kind of Grimm and Aesop tale. So with that said,  I’m kinda diggin’  the Paramount Pictures and MGM joint Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.

The photo above gives us a good look at Hansel (Jeremy Renner) and Gretel (Gemma Arterton). The movie was directed by Dead Snow’s Tommy Wirkola.

Arterton recently spoke to EW about the tone of the film and revealed that it is a mix of Pulp Fiction and fairly tale. Here are some excerpts from the interview (AFTER THE JUMP):

Hawkeye Confirmed as New Jason Bourne!

Wow, that was FAST!

It seems that Jeremy Renner, who burst into theaters in The Hurt Locker, has rapidly become the new “it” man.

Universal Pictures announced a short time ago that Renner has officially been cast as the new Jason Bourne in the reboot/prequel entitled The Bourne Legacy!

Director Tony Gilroy originally wanted Oscar Issac from Sucker Punch to star in the film, but thankfully the studio didn’t approve. I’m actually excited for this, as Renner has the action and bad-ass chops to pull it off.

Want proof?

He just finished filming Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol, currently making Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, and he is playing Clint Barton (aka Hawkeye) in Marvel Studios upcoming film The Avengers directed by Joss Whedon.

Do you think of Renner (I’m biased, as I’m a huge Marvel and Hawkeye fan)? Is he up to the task to be be Bourne?

Let us know in the comments!

Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters cast - Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton

If there’s one thing I love, it’s boobs. Thought you all should know that. My other love, completely unrelatable to boobs, is fairy tales. Before there was science fiction, fables offered young minds fantastic pieces of fiction with morsels of morality. Consider me appreciative. What I like even more is when classic tales of Grimm and Aesop get re-imagined in some ridiculous modern way. Which is why I’m kinda diggin’  Paramount Pictures, MGM joint Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. Starring Jeremy RennerGemma Arterton and Famke Janssen it’s a reimagining of the dark classic story, and it explores what happened to Hansel and Gretel 15 years after the gingerbread house incident. THR reports that the movie will be shot in 3D, and that they will release the $60 million dollar production on March 2nd 2011.

Will Ferrell
and Adam McKay are producing the film and they thought the idea was so cool that they helped push it into production. McKay said in a previous interview:

The idea is, they’ve grown up and they hunt witches. It’s a hybrid sort of “old-timey” feeling, yet there’s pump-action shotguns. Modern technology but in an old style. We heard it and we were just like, ‘That’s a freakin’ franchise! You could make three of those!’

Wait. Will Ferrel is attached? Dammit, never mind.. this is gonna suck. I hate that fucker. Yes, he’s made some funny flicks (Anchor Man, Step Brothers and Elf), but compared to all his shitty flicks and annoying child-ish attitude the good does not out way the bad. Then again, from the mind of a child. Hansel and Gretel is right up his alley.
