It’s official! The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood has an official opening date! There are already Wizarding Worlds at Universal Studios in Orlando and Japan, but now the magic is being brought to the West Coast. Fans of the J.K. Rowling novels have been eagerly anticipating the opening of the attraction for almost five years. Until today, no one was quite sure how long that wait would be, as Universal officials have all remained very tight-lipped about the project. After all, everyone knows that Golden Snitches get Golden Stitches. We’re sorry. We don’t even know what that means. Anyway, Universal released a video to announcing the opening date with special guest star, Luna Lovegood actress Evanna Lynch, delivering the news. Let’s watch the video below now!

Every day the internet produces an astounding amount of goodies and gems. Most hilarious, some amusing, but all worth at least a few seconds of your time. We here at Nerd Bastards try to bring you the best bits of news and nerdery the webz has to offer, with a bit of snark thrown in. But sometimes not everything makes the cut. Monday through Friday we’ll be bringing you our inbox leftovers, our forgotten bookmarks, the nerdy bits that simply slipped through the cracks. You can submit items to Nerdy Bits by emailing us at nerdybits@nerdbastards.com.

All the Harry Potter fans out there are gonna love this. I know I did.

It’s kinda strange to think that it’s all over now; there are no more books to eagerly await, and the movies have wrapped up as well. It’s particularly strange because a lot of us grew up with these books and we got used to having our regular visits to Hogwarts and exploring the magic of J. K. Rowling‘s universe with the thrill of wondering what comes next. Now, it’s no less magical but it’s more nostalgic than anything. It’s the end of the world as we know it. Really.

TheManBatman took this metaphorical apocalypse into his own hands and created a fuckin’ amazing fan video. At 15 minutes long, it’s chock full of Harry Potter goodness with clips spanning across all 8 films. Check out the video and let it take you on a journey through the years of magic. There’s no other way to describe it.

It’s okay if this makes you cry.  Nobody’s judging you.  I swear.

The Interwebz is a great place for nerdy art and the like. A lot of the time it’s fuckin’ weird shit like gay Vulcan pr0nz. But there are a lot of awesome things that we see on a daily basis and we’re lazy nerd bastards so we just round them all up once a week for your nerdgasm glory.

First off this week is some paper art by Lucie Thomas and Thibault Zimmermann, who call themselves Zim and Zou. This collection, called Back to Basics, consists of models of retro electronics that are hand made with sustainable paper. Every scrap is saved for potential later use. It’s pretty fuckin’ insane. Check out the site for more pictures, and a video detailing their process.

More after the juuuuuuuump!

Hogwarts

Sorry young wizards, but school has been canceled…

Last Friday, while shooting a battle scene for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, a mock-up Hogwarts Castle made of timber, steel and plastic, caught on fire, which took out a large portion of the set. The fire took place at Leavesden Studios and firefighters from Watford put the blaze out in 40 minutes. However, the damage had been done at an estimate of 100,000 pounds. The battle scene, where Harry and an army of students try to defend Hogwarts from the evil wizard Voldemort, used pyrotechnics and explosions. No one was injured in the blaze but 100 film crew members were present. No main characters were present at the time.

Are your wands stiffed in anticipation of Universal Studios: The Wizarding World of Harry Potter? Well then take gander like Ollivander (sorry, it rymes) at the first official photo of Hogwarts Castle. Although it’s still very much a work in progress, the magnificence of Hogwarts Castle has taken shape above Hogsmeade in Universal Studios: Orlando latest attraction. We do not know what the precise scale is, defiantly not 1:1 but regardless the structure is massive. The wizarding school replica will house a new state-of-the-art attraction – Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey – that uses ground-breaking technology to bring magic, characters and stories of Harry Potter to life in way never before experinced. Outside of the Castle is where the world of Harry Potter is fully realized. The highly anticipated land will also feature attractions, shops and signature eating establishments of the Potter-verse (basically a giant Harry Potter themed mall). You can drink Butter Beer from 3 Broomsticks, buy extendable ears at Zonko’s, have an interactive wand experience at Ollivanders, send a certified Hogsmeade postmarked letter from the OWL post and take home a number of magical creatures and merchandise from Filch’s Emporium of Confiscated Goods. Whether your a Harry Potter fan or not this is some seriously impressive shit.  The park is set to open sometime in the Spring of 2010.  For more info you can check out the full press release after the jump.
