Hughes Brothers

Just when we get news about Zac Efron possibly playing the role of Kaneda or Tetsuo in the upcoming Akira remake, it seems that some one at WB wants folks to keep talking about the film. Recent news indicate that Morgan Freeman (Dark Knight, Wanted) has just been offer the role of Colonel Shikishima, who was simply known as The Colonel.

Who knows if Freeman knows the Akira property or not, he would be able to show the class the Colonel has on the big screen. What do y’all think of this possible casting news? Would Freeman play the role right or it doesn’t matter who is in the film as this will be crap either way? Tell us how you feel about the Hughes Brothers film by leaving a comment.

Live Action Akira Movie To Be PG-13

AKIRA5A

“TETSUOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!” was my reaction when I found out that Warner Bros. wants Akira to be a PG-13 film. In a recent interview, Albert Hughes (The Book of Eli, Menace II Society) revealed that while a R rated Akira film would have been obvious, WB told the Hughes Brothers that it has to be PG-13. While it may be a challenge, it seems that both Hughes brothers are up for the challenge to deliver us a faithful adaptation that will entertain both, long time fans and possible new fans to the franchise. While I understand why WB wants it to be PG-13 (it’s all about the money), I would still want a R rated Akira film because it would be proper that way and most fans would probably agree that it should as well.

Another thing that was mentioned during the interview was that Albert, unlike his brother Allen, commented that he may not return for the sequel if Akira ends up being a two part film. I don’t know about you guys, but when I first heard that the Hughes brothers was going to direct Akira, it gave me hope and now hearing this news, well, let’s just say I’ll be screaming for Tetsuo some more.

What do ya’ll think? Would a PG-13 Akira film work or will it just become a kiddie version of what was suppose to be a violent and action filled film? Also, does the news of a sequel that may not be directed by the Hughes brothers affect how you feel about the film? Tell us what ya think.

akiraAkira, an anime my folks didn’t want me to watch when I was young because of its violence but still wanted me to watch when I got the chance, and man, was I glad to finally watch it. For those who haven’t seen it, its a film set in a futuristic post-apocalyptic Tokyo and with psychic and military warfare included. There has been talks for couple years now that we would be getting a live action Akira movie but seems like the writers strike put a halt in it (what did WGA Strike not hurt or stopped?). It seems Book of Eli directors, Albert and Allen Hughes are in talks with WB to direct the rumored 2 film adaptation of the hit anime and manga series. Do you guys think they will be able to pull of what it takes for Akira to be translated well from Anime/Manga to Live Action, or is this something we should be worried about. One thing I know, it’ll be better than Kanye West’s Stronger music video.
