Pacific Rim was one of the most anticipated movies of the summer, but it’s somehow been unable to heat up the box office in any way that might obviously lend itself to sequel speculation. But with the release of Pac-Rim still imminent in huge markets like China and Japan, which could result in Pacific Rim adding significantly to its box office coffers, it would not be entirely realistic for the powers that be to be thinking about possibilities for part 2.

Well good news, Guillermo del Toro is way ahead of you.

MTV got the chance to talk to del Toro recently, and the director says that Travis Beacham is already on the case in terms of penning the screenplay, and he’s got some interesting items for the writer to put on the page. Let’s go to the video tape:

If you’re sadly not-American, and thus are unable to view the above video (seriously, what happened to the World Wide Web?), here’s what del Toro said in point form:

The possibility of Kaiju/Jaeger hybrids?

I’ll tell you a couple of things. We will have Gipsy 2.0 for sure. We will have Gipsy 2.0 for sure. Second thing is you’re gonna see a merging of Kaiju and Jaeger. And that is quite special.

How is their going to be a hybrid, and who will it fight for?

Just think about it for a second. We sent Gipsy to the other side, right? It exploded, but whatever remains stays there.

Don’t just expect the robots and the monsters to evolve…

We’ve drifted with a Kaiju brain. Well, then start riffing on that and you’ll get to something.

What do you Bastards think? Does this make you excited for another Pac-Rim, or was one enough?

Pacific-Rim-11

Guillermo del Toro‘s Pacific Rim has a new trailer out entitled Resistance. If this trailer doesn’t get you to buy a movie ticket this weekend, I’m betting you’re still suffering severe personal issues resulting from all those humiliating Rock’Um Sock’Um Robot losses to your brother or sister as a child.

You can check out the movie synopsis and the new trailer below.

Pacific Rim Synopsis:

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Pacific Rim hits theater screens this Thursday, July 11th starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Brad William Henke and Diego Klattenhoff.

This is an interesting look at what the actors had to go through and what methods Guillermo del Toro used to bring the world of Jaeger’s battling mammoth monsters to the big screen. Toro pitches Pacific Rim as:

“The action in the movie is what you would have dreamt to see when you were eleven years old.”

It’s Rock’um Sock’um Robots on a giant scale with Godzilla like monsters thrown in. I’m all about that. Take a look at the featurette below and let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Something tells me this number is going to show up before screenings of Star Trek Into Darkness tonight…

This new Pacific Rim trailer has the same beats, and features some of the same footage that the Comic Con trailer that was released a few weeks ago featured, but there’s some new stuff in there too. Regardless, I think at this point, if Pacific Rim blows it will be the biggest nerd disappointment since The Phantom Menace, and I don’t think we all want to revisit that kind of disappointment.
