With Supergirl now in production we’ll be eagerly anticipating the knowledge of which DC Comics characters will be showing up on the series, you know, aside from the several comic book characters that are part of the main cast. Casting is fun. Especially for comic book movies and TV shows because there’s always at least half of the fanbase outraged about who got hired to play who. So having said that, let’s talk about Lucy Lane. The less famous of the Lane sisters was rumored to be due for a Supergirl appearance, and now she’s been cast in the show in the person of Jenna Dewan Tatum. (more…)
I think it’s been an avowed rule of portrayals of Jimmy Olsen that Superman’s best friend is – What’s the word I’m looking for? – a nerd. He was a young kid that wore a bow tie for decades for crying out loud! Unless you’re The Doctor, nothing says “nerd” like wearing a bow tie and being under the age of 50 (of course Doctor Who may not exactly be the lampshade I’m thinking of for this rule). But if Jimmy Olsen isn’t supposed to be anything, it’s a well-cut side of beef that’s part underwear model, and part athlete. After all, what good is it to be Superman’s best friend if it looks like you’d have a good chance at kicking his ass if he didn’t have super-powers? To wit, Mehcad Brooks has now been cast as Olsen in CBS’ Supergirl series. (more…)
DC continues its effort to dominate the Television Landscape when it comes to superheros by throwing yet another super powered series into the mix of Arrow, Gotham, Flash, and Constantine. The title character of Supergirl (Kara Danvers), and her sister were revealed last week and drew some heated discussion from fans. Now there’s sure to be more fuel added to the already raging Supergirl fan angst as more casting details about four additional Supergirl series regulars Cat Grant, James Olsen, Winslow ‘Wynn’ Schott and Hank Henshaw hit the Internet. Just who the hell are they and how do they fit in? (more…)
It wouldn’t be the first change from the “holy” Superman canon we’ve seen in Zack Snyder‘s Man of Steel, but it might become the one causing the most stir. This is still only rumor, but some detective work from Comic Book Movie has uncovered a listing on IMDB for Rebecca Buller in the role of Jenny Olsen for Man of Steel, with no mention of good ‘ole Jimmy to be found. Obviously, IMDB can be wrong, but they’re right more often than not. So, is it Jenny who’s Superman’s Best Friend?
Here’s the evidence: first, turning Jimmy into Jenny wouldn’t be the only change Snyder’s made, he’s also turned Lois Lane (Amy Adams) into a ginger and Perry White (Laurence Fishburne) into a black man. Both are reasonable changes that won’t necessarily alter either character fundamentally, but changing the gender of Superman’s pal just might.
The second piece of evidence confirms that whomever Buller is playing, she likely works at The Daily Planet. She can be seen in the trailer, around the 1:53 mark, fleeing the Planet building as it explodes behind her and White.
What do you think? Hello Jenny, goodbye Jimmy? Personally, if this is the case, I love it. As /Film‘s Angie Han points out, “Female characters are woefully underrepresented in comic book movies, especially if they’re not playing love interests or maternal figures.” A platonic, female, best friend for Superman would be a very welcomed change, indeed.
Man of Steel opens nationwide June 14.
