Judge Dread

It seems that Karl Urban‘s Judge Dread finally has his nemesis!

It was initially disregarded as rumors, but GeekTyrant is claiming that the villain Madeline Madrigal AKA Ma-Ma will be played by none other than Sarah Connor herself, Lena Headey (from Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and the wife of Leonidas in 300).

It is good that we are finally learning more about the movie, as it is a big production with many fans awaiting a movie truer to the comic book than the terrible Stallone movie made in the 90’s.

Headey will also joing Juno‘s Olivia Thirlby who is set to play Cassandra Anderson, a character who has psychic powers which include being able to sense approaching danger, foresee events of the near future and telepathy … Pre-production for the film began in August at Cape Town Film Studios in South Africa, and the movie is scheduled to be released in 2012.

The film was written by screenwriter Alex Garland who wrote both 28 Days Later and Sunshine, and Pete Travis is directing. He developed the movie Vantage Point.

Here’s the films Synopsis:

DREDD takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot – if necessary. The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and the frenetic vision of director Pete Travis bring DREDD to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film that returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip.

Seems There’s A New Judge in Town

A new Judge Dredd movie based off of the popular anti-hero has been in discussion for a long time now, and it looks like all the pieces are finally coming together. Now, there was a Judge Dredd movie with Stallone many years ago, which sucked, so it appears they are going to make it as dark as the comic book (and have the Judge never take off his helmet, as in the comics).

So, who would you have play him?

Why, Karl Urban, of course! United Kingdom blog Bleeding Cool says that Urban will indeed be offered the title role in the upcoming movie.

Urban is well-known to nerds and geeks everywhere for his work playing Doctor Bones McCoy in the recent JJ Abrams Star Trek movie, as well as Eomer in Lord Of The Rings.

Pete Travis is still scheduled to direct, from a script by Alex Garland, and until the casting news is announced at Comic-Con later this week, it is all still speculation.
