Jurassic World 2
It feels like the Summer of 2017 has only barely begun, but we’re already looking ahead to the Summer of 2018. Depending on what studio you work for, that might very much be the case. Some studios have been enjoying this summer’s box office weather, but others might be thinking it’s a washout, like the fine people that just lost almost $100 on The Mummy. Universal Studios ain’t sweating (too much) though because this time next year they’ll be selling us dinosaurs with the release of the sequel to Jurassic World, or rather Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom as we will have to call it from this day forward… (more…)
Yesterday production began for Jurassic World 2. The sequel to the 2015 nostalgia-fueled megahit/remake/sequel of the Jurassic Park franchise, Jurassic World is about to once again resurrect dinosaurs. Returning for the sequel will be Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, and BD Wong (rumored) for the further adventures of those characters. Newcomers for the upcoming sequel include Toby Jones and Justice Smith (Netflix’s The Get Down). Today a new member has been added to the cast.
These are certainly going to be busy days for Chris Pratt. On the weekend he appeared in a video announcing the start of principal photography on Avengers: Infinity War, but on the opposite side of the ocean from The Avengers set in Atlanta, another Pratt franchise seems to be getting ready to roll as well. Yesterday, Jurassic World‘s producer Frank Marshall sent out a tweet that seemed to indicate that it’s dino time again, or close to it. Meanwhile, the studio has made some moves that more strongly hint about what the storyline of the highly anticipated sequel will entail. (more…)
After the Jurassic Park reboot/sequel Jurassic World hit theaters, a wave of nostalgia hit the country and everyone packed theaters to see yet another dino adventure. Grossing more than $1.6 billion worldwide, it’s a no-brainer that a sequel would be commissioned. Director Colin Trevorrow, now a household name, was tapped to direct Star Wars: Episode IX, so director Juan Antonio Bayona was tapped to direct to sequel due in 2018. The director of The Orphanage and A Monster Calls recently talked about the upcoming film and his desire to make the sequel. (more…)
In the whole of the first three Jurassic Park movies, there was one man that the production of Jurassic World depended on to be their through line from the earlier films to the new entry in the franchise. When in doubt, you call Wong. B.D. Wong! The talented character actor appeared as Dr. Henry Wu in the original Jurassic Park, and reprised the part of Jurassic World, and since Wu escaped unscathed, fans have been asking the question: Will Wong, and Wu, be appearing in the forthcoming sequel directed by J.A. Bayona? Jurassic World 2‘s producer seems to think so! (more…)
Jurassic World was one of last year’s surprising hits. The nostalgia-fueled, semi-reboot of the Jurassic Park franchise is one of the top grossing movies of all time, making more than $1.67 billion worldwide ($652 million domestic). It’s a no-brainer that a sequel to the film would be greenlit. Next year we will be getting Jurassic World 2 hitting theaters June 22, 2018. Colin Trevorrow will not be returning to direct the film as he’ll be busy with Star Wars: Episode IX. However, director Juan Antonio Bayona will be taking over directing duties, and he offered a few details for the upcoming film.
Jurassic World gets a lot of credit for reigniting the Jurassic Park franchise, but it really didn’t get into any of the serious implications of genetic technology that was at the heart of the original book written by Michael Crichton. Sure, it was touched on, but all that serious, sciencey stuff kind of got in the way of dino-mayhem and Chris Pratt being awesome. Well the good news is that Pratt will likely still be awesome in the upcoming Jurassic World 2, but the better news is that the producers will be working back into the film some of those serious sci-fi themes. If animal rights issues are your bag, then Jurassic World 2 will be for you. (more…)
Only one cast member from the original Jurassic Park turned up in last year’s Jurassic World, and that’s B.D. Wong, who played the suddenly Machiavellian Dr. Henry Wu. Wong’s screen time in the first Jurassic checked out at about two-minutes near the beginning of the film, but what happened to all those other characters 20 years later? What happened to chaos enthusiast Ian Malcolm, or legacy kids Lex and Tim? How about Dr. Alan Grant, how is he coping in the Jurassic World world? While the production of Jurassic World 2 would probably love getting any one of the old cast in the sequel, the man that played Alan Grant has a grim perspective on where his character would be today. Jurassic World, the fourth film in the Jurassic Park series (that largely ignored the previous two sequels, especially the third), was a smash success at the box office when it was released in June of last year. The movie was able to domestically gross $652,270,625—and even more impressively $1,670,400,637 worldwide. All of this profit was based on a 150 million dollar budget, so yeah. They made money. A lot of money. Not that it was undeserved, because general consensus was that both critics and audience liked it. It’s not surprising, then, that word has gotten out of the inevitable sequel going into pre-production. (more…)
Jurassic World 2 has found its director. Colin Trevorrow is stepping away from the director’s chair to Executive Produce, although he will be helping write the script with Derek Connolly. In a tweet today, Trevorrow announced the director taking over for the sequel, JA Bayona (The Impossible). (more…)
