Katana

Whatever else you might say about the movie, Suicide Squad – for better or worse – definitely had a distinct look. The bubblegum splashes of colour dance across a grim background of crime and depravity creating a juxtaposition that has definitely captured the world’s attention. As well as standing out from the other films released at the time, it also had enough of a visual personality to be fairly distinctive when surrounded by the other superhero movies in the limelight round about now. Arrow57feature1

Arrow has suffered from a distinct lack of both energy and direction this season. It meandered from one decision on the part of the characters in one episode, like Oliver’s refusal to indulge in his romantic feelings for Felicity, only to have them regret that decision in the next. Then starts the backpedaling, a primary feature in this one step forward, three steps back journey to the climactic showdown between Arrow and the gang versus Ra’s al Ghul and the League of Assassins. Yet, in this penultimate episode of Arrow’s third season, the series shows a little fire in its belly, a little urgency. But is it too little, too late? (more…)

Every day the internet produces an astounding amount of goodies and gems. Most hilarious, some amusing, but all worth at least a few seconds of your time. We here at Nerd Bastards try to bring you the best bits of news and nerdery the webz has to offer, with a bit of snark thrown in. But sometimes not everything makes the cut. Monday through Friday we’ll be bringing you our inbox leftovers, our forgotten bookmarks, the nerdy bits that simply slipped through the cracks. You can submit items to Nerdy Bits by emailing us at nerdybits@nerdbastards.com.

Above: As much as I’m not a fan of Harley Quinn’s newest duds, I love this cosplay. Somehow, model Florencia Muir and photographer Jonathan Duran make it work. Plus, The Joker’s face is a nice touch. [Geek Tyrant]

With Batman: The Brave and The Bold off the airwaves it was only a matter of moments until a new Batman cartoon would come to take its place. TV without a current Batman cartoon is a high crime punishable by forced exposure to the worst of superhero cartoons, like any Fantastic Four cartoon ever. Cartoon Network has announced their next Bat-toon will be Beware the Batman, a CGI series featuring new villains never before seen in animation and Katana rather than Robin as sidekick. This is also the series that will have a gun-toting Alfred and that image alone has me kinda pumped. Here’s the official press release,

A cool, new take on the classic Dark Knight franchise, Beware the Batman incorporates Batman’s core characters with a rogues gallery of new villains not previously seen in animated form. Along with backup from ex-secret agent Alfred and lethal swordstress Katana, the Dark Knight faces the twisted machinations of Gotham City’s criminal underworld led by the likes of Anarky, Professor Pyg, Mister Toad and Magpie. Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, this action-packed detective thriller deftly redefines what we have come to know as a “Batman show.” Featuring cutting-edge CGI visuals to match the intricate twists and turns of the narrative, Batman steps out of the shadows and into the spotlight for an entirely new generation of fans. With WBA’s Sam Register executive producing, and Batman Beyond’s Glen Murakami and Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated’s Mitch Watson producing, Beware the Batman, based on characters from DC Comics, is coming soon to Cartoon Network!

The promise of, “cutting-edge CGI visuals to match the intricate twists and turns of the narrative,” doesn’t wow me, but I have faith in the premise anyway. I like that they’re shaking things up by having a young Katana instead of yet another Robin and getting to experience new villains, like Professor Pyg, in a cartoon sounds awesome. And while the CG animation will be a first for Batman I can’t help but notice this first image seems to have more in common with Batman: The Animated Series than The Brave and The Bold or The Batman.
