Dominic Cooper‘s already played one larger than life comic book character, the guy that spawned Tony Stark and raised him, Howard Stark. After appearances in Captain America: The First Avenger and in the Agent Carter TV series, Cooper’s got that role pretty much perfected, and he has to share it with John Slattery, who will play Stark when he appears next in Ant-Man. Don’t weep for Cooper though, he’s an in-demand actor, and he’s being courted – hard – for another major comic book role, the title part in AMC‘s upcoming series Preacher. This has been in the works for a while, but as casting the pilot is almost done, it seems that Cooper is drawing closer to his own deal to play Jesse Custer. (more…)
The annual Television Critics Association summer panel is currently underway in L.A. It’s a chance for networks and cable channels to show off their wares for the fall season, introduce new shows and start building the hype for September and October premieres. As I’m sure you already know (you’re reading a website called Nerd Bastards after all), there are an inordinate number comic book based TV series debuting this TV season, and one of them is NBC’s Constantine. Already the butt of some controversy (for comic fans), the cast and crew of the show were definitely in the hot seat as the NBC portion of the TCA got underway. (more…)
Ever wish you had a time machine and could go back and fix a stupid decision? Well, that would cause all kinds of temporal anomalies and none of us is Marty McFly. Fact is, lots of us would make things worse, but sometimes you can just call a Mulligan. A redo. And that’s exactly what NBC is doing when they decided to write out a made up character from the new upcoming Constantine television series, and replace that character with someone from the comic books. Some might argue that it should’ve been written that way from the start, and some would be absolutely right. But when studios get their hands on priceless properties they don’t know what to do with, you get Marvin, Wendy and Wonder Dog tagging along with the Superfriends. In this rare case, NBC saw the error of their ways and hit the delete button, erasing that embarrassing Facebook post. Now, after you’re done reading about what happened, just act like it didn’t happen…
It didn’t take long for NBC to promote a new clip from their upcoming DC Comics supernatural series Constantine. The first trailer hit the Internet over the weekend and this morning NBC followed that up with this new clip featuring lead Matt Ryan (Constantine) and Lucy Griffiths (Liv). (more…)
For many, the Francis Lawrence-helmed take on Constantine, everyone’s favorite English exorcist and master of the dark arts, was a massive disappointment (despite the fact that it was a pretty solid big budget fantasy noir with an incredible, androgynous turn from Tilda Swinton as Gabriel the Arc Angel). The film jettisoned the English origins of the character, tailoring it to Keanu Reeves’ movie star persona while shoehorning in a side-character played by Shia LeBeouf (which never bodes well for studio adaptations of geek properties).
Now comes NBC, whose upcoming TV take on the character looks like it’s going to atone for the sins Lawrence committed in the eyes of fans. Today we get out first look at their small-screen take on the DC/Vertigo supernatural detective and it looks like they may have a huge winner on their hands.
The NBC adaptation of DC/Vertigo’s Hellblazer comic series is in full force. And as production moves ahead, one of the first things to deal with is, naturally, a little bit of casting. It looks like we’ve got a number of faces showing up this week, slowly filling the ranks of colorful characters that make the world of Constantine their home. Scroll on to see who is coming on board thus far. (more…)
