The recent string of live-action fairy tales – usually twists on classic stories in an attempt to provide extra depth – hasn’t been all that critically successful. Films like Alice in Wonderland and Cinderella earned Disney piles of cash, but neither surpassed or even equaled the quality of their source material or the more well-known adaptation. Still, they’re gonna keep making em’. They’re an easy sell – a way to continue cashing in on established brands. There’s literally no new fairy tales, so of course they’re gonna keep tapping the same well.
This latest announcement, though, may have you groaning a little louder and a little more confused than usual.
Disney is planning a Maleficent sequel! Because of course. (more…)
Hot on the heels of the recent success of Disney‘s live action Cinderella at the box office, Disney has announced that Mulan will be their next animated character brought to life on the big screen as a live action version. (more…)
There was once an idea about fairy tale characters making a life for themselves in the real world, struggling to get by in a strange and terrifying world that’s far, far different then the one they came from, and that idea was Fables. Kidding aside, it is also the idea behind Once Upon a Time, the weekly adventures of a bunch of fairy tale characters trying to make a life for themselves in a small Maine town called Storybrooke. Granted, the show is a great deal more Disney-oriented than Fables (see the current Frozen story arc), which is understandable given that Disney itself produces the show, so naturally one should expect more Disney characters with every new storyline. To wit, prepare to welcome a certain duplicitous half sea witch, half octopus to town. (more…)
Disney is no stranger to the musical genre. As a matter of fact, it wouldn’t be unfair to say that musicals are Disney’s bread and butter and they have almost perfected the art of transforming a medium that some choose to avoid into a mainstream movie event that appeals to almost any demographic. The trailer for the latest outing in Disney’s movie musical library, Into the Woods, doesn’t showcase much of the music that will likely fill almost every scene, but it does give audiences plenty of reasons to run to the theater opening weekend. The recent string of live-action fairy tales – usually twists on classic stories in an attempt to provide extra depth – hasn’t been all that critically successful. Films like Alice in Wonderland and Oz the Great and Powerful earned Disney piles of cash, but neither surpassed or even equaled the quality of their source material or the more well-known adaptations. In theatres this weekend is Maleficent, Disney’s twist on Sleeping Beauty in where focus is put on the tale’s dark villainess instead of the young, cursed princess. (more…)
Films and books that re-imagine classic fairy tales in a format that paints “bad” characters in a more sympathetic–or at least morally complex manner a la Wicked seem to be the order of the day.
And Disney‘s Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie and scheduled for release in the U.S. at the end of this month, looks like one of the most ambitious entries in this genre. Take a look at the trailer after the jump for a glimpse at the dark fairy’s past: (more…)
I don’t know about you guys, but I was a little freaked out the first time I say the trailer for Maleficent in the movie theater, because Angelina Jolie looks like she walked out of the damn animated movie Sleeping Beauty with her portrayal. The awesomeness of Angelina Jolie is foremost on the mind of the cast and crew of Maleficent in a new featurette for the film. Along with that, Disney’s released five new character posters, which paints kind of a dark picture of the pending events in the film, which I guess is apropos when the villain is the main character. To some, the very thought of sitting down and watching a Disney cartoon is enough to make the stomach turn. I mean, all that cuteness and black-and-white perspective on right and wrong – what’s not to hate? Okay, so maybe it’s just me. Still, there are plenty of us out there that wouldn’t mind seeing something a little more realistic, even in a fantasy tale such as Snow White. Enter Disney’s new take on the tale. Maleficent brings us a new story, one that puts the villainess in the spotlight. And now there’s a featurette to introduce you a bit to what we can expect from this flick. (more…)
