22 years ago, an independent film hit the art houses across the US and taught the less adventurous among the audiences a new meaning to the word “snowball”. While Clerks remains director Kevin Smith’s most celebrated film to many cinephiles out there, there are few, if any, that could have guessed that one film, a film that celebrates all things slacker, would go on to spawn a whole universe of films. Sure, audiences just can’t get enough of Jay and Silent Bob, but 22 years and 5 movies later, the fact that Smith still has some steam left in his Red Bank Saga, and that audiences are still ready to continue the journey alongside Jay and his hetero life mate, is damn near a miracle. While Smith fans (and Smith haters, for that matter) await any word on Clerks 3 that they can get, the director has decided to turn his focus on another project: the Mallrats sequel/tv show. In a recent interview with Creative Screenwriting, the mind behind the ViewAskewniverse has finally started dropping details on the upcoming series and where the tale is headed. (more…)
In recent months, we’ve heard chatter about the making of a sequel to Kevin Smith‘s ‘Mallrats’, his second feature film released 21 years ago that starred a whole mess of talented actors. Ben Affleck, Jason Lee, Shannen Doherty, Joey Lauren Adams, Michael Rooker, Jason Mewes and Smith himself. Even Stan Lee had an appearance, one much, much longer than anything he’s done in his Marvel cameos. As the months rolled on, we heard more and more of the original cast had signed on to be a part of the sequel. Last count, Smith had nearly everyone game for a reprisal.
So now we have ‘Mallrats 2,’ or rather ‘Mallbrats’ as it’s being called, on our minds. What will it be about? What is this new mall like? How will it look seeing everyone 21 years older than the first time? And the big question… WHEN IS IT COMING?! It looks like we have an answer. Smith called in to 93.3 WMMR radio in Philadelphia and chatted with the morning team of Preston and Steve. On the show, Kevin divulged why this has been hanging in limbo and just what the plans are now. (more…)
It is fairly common knowledge now that everyone hates Kevin Smith. People hate his stupid movies. People hate his stupid attitude. People hate his stupid voice. People hate his stupid beard. People hate Kevin Smith, is the point. Look at the comments of any article centering on Smith and you’re bound to find comments criticizing his movies or his face or his beard or whatever else people may complain about in comment sections. Yes, it would be easy to get caught up in the tsunami of hate that is swelling off the coast of Kevin Smith, who is now a beachfront metropolis to make this clumsy analogy work.
The point is, the coastal city of Kevin Smith may not make sense to you. It may be weird or disturbing. Maybe you loved it at first, but as you spent more time there, you realized that it wasn’t home. Regardless, there are countless millions who do enjoy the coastal city of Kevin Smith and many more who would enjoy a return trip, if only they would make the time. Whatever group you fall into, there’s no sense in joining the tsunami of hate, because tsunamis only destroy and kill people. That’s why a wall had to be erected against the tsunami. That’s why this article is written in defense of Kevin Smith.
The reality of a Mallrats sequel has has hit another earmark. After having confirmed that practically the entire cast from the first film is returning (no Affleck as of yet), Kevin Smith has just announced the sequels title. (more…)
To recap, Kevin Smith had a whole series of movies lined up for the next couple of years, and then he floated the idea of revisiting his second film, Mallrats, in a sequel. He did it via Twitter, so naturally everyone took the tease as gospel and ran with it past Excitedville all the way to Hype City. Maybe it’s our relentless obsession with nostalgia, or maybe it’s the stars aligning on the 20th anniversary of the original film, but Smith just couldn’t stop talking about Mallrats 2. The latest development: we will no longer have to wait two years for it! In a new post, Smith conformed that Mallrats 2 will be his next project. (more…)
There’s been a lot of news lately about the possibility of a second Mallrats movie. Back in 1995, Mallrats was the highly anticipated follow-up to Kevin Smith‘s big break, Clerks, but it ended up bombing. Horribly. It remained a black mark on Smith’s IMDb profile for some time, and then Cop Out was released. Kidding aside though, the film has been received more warmly by fans in the last 20 years, which undoubtedly helps Smith make a case for Mallrats 2. But that’s still about two years away at least, so what are Mallrats fans to do in the meantime. How about a reunion of some of the cast for a car commercial? No, I’m not drunk. (more…)
Normally when you say “I smell a rat,” that’s a bad thing. Of course, no one’s ever going to accuse Kevin Smith of doing the normal thing, or even doing what’s expected of him, or even on following through on his promises. Hey, remember when Smith was going to retire? No, neither does he, and he’s got a whole slate of movies on his plate to keep him busy through to the end of 2016. And then, last week, he teased about a new project. A sequel. Granted Smith’s been talking for long years about making Clerks III, but the new sequel idea he had was for another project, Mallrats. Now nearly 20 years after the fact, Smith confirmed, he’s ready to go back to the mall. (more…)
Remember when Kevin Smith said that he had one movie left and he was quitting filmmaking? No, I don’t think he does either because all he talks about these days is all the new movies he has on the go. His proclamation about retiring came around the time of Red State‘s release in 2012, and since then he’s released Tusk, wrapped Yoga Hosers, and is prepping the much ballyhooed Clerks III. But is there room in Smith’s schedule for another journey back to the ViewAskewniverse? Perhaps there’s a certain group of shopping center irregulars who demand some attention 20 years after the fact? Yes, not so subtlety, Smith is talking about Mallrats 2. (more…)
Feelin’ old alert! Mallrats is turning 20 years old later this year. You may not recall Mallrats, as it was less than warmly received in the fall of 1995, thus resulting in it being placed somewhere on the low-end of the remembrances of Kevin Smith‘s empire along with Cop-Out and that Daredevil comic book miniseries he never finished. Still, Mallrats has its fans, perhaps out of the thirst for vintage Smith, or perhaps it’s because time heals all wounds, but for those fans comes news that Smith is planning a very special celebration for these two decades of love, friendship and hanging out at the mall with nothing better to do.
