Marvel Television

One surprise this year was FX and Marvel’s partnership with Legion. The television show based on a relatively unknown X-Men-related character, Legion focused on mental illness under the guise of a superhero TV show. David Heller (Dan Stevens), an incredibly powerful mutant spent much of the first season coming to grips with his power, and the fact that he had the parasitic Shadow King (another equally powerful mutant played brilliantly by Aubrey Plaza) buried deep within his already fragile mind. The show gave us some great mind-tripping visuals, as well as an intriguing story.

You might as well call this “Marvel Week.”

First, we got our first look at the Royal Family for the upcoming ABC Inhumans TV show that will first hit theaters for the first two episodes (thanks to a sweet deal Marvel, ABC, and Imax) and then afterward appear nightly on ABC this fall. Then we got a teaser for the upcoming Runaways TV show, that will premiere on Hulu next year. Then, we got a trailer for the new Defenders TV show premiering this summer on Netflix. The sweet cherry on top, was the release of Guardians of the Galaxy in theaters this premiering today. We here at Nerdbastards LOVED it.

But Marvel’s not done yet!

Today’s been a pretty interesting day for Marvel Television. Earlier today, we got our first teaser for the Netflix “street shows” big crossover, The Defenders showcasing Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist as they team up to save New York. Well, it looks like that was just the tip of the iceberg as Marvel’s other upcoming streaming service show debuted a teaser as well.

If you thought the Marvel Cinematic Universe was getting crowded, the TV portion of the House of Ideas is itself getting more bloated by the day it seems. Adding to a TV line-up that already includes Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Legion, not to mention over half-a-dozen other series in some form of development, comes word that Freeform (formally ABC Family) is looking to advance it’s own Marvel Universe by adding New Warriors to its schedule. There are a couple of caveats though. One, it’s going to be a comedy, and two, the team’s going to be lead by Squirrel Girl. (more…)
