Mary Jane Watson

Shaiene Woodley‘s got it made in the shade with a starring role in the big new franchise based on a popular best-selling book series. Indeed, Divergent has made $100 million so far at the domestic box office and seems primed to carry on to complete the trilogy for all those nervous completists out there. Sadly though for Spider-Man completists, that means that Woodley is even more unlikely to come back for any future Amazing Spider-Man films. (more…)

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 update from yesterday has some new twists and turns and the production news just keeps getting messier. First director Marc Webb announces that the Mary Jane scenes already shot with actress Shailene Woodley would not be appearing in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, leading many to believe that those would just show up in The Amazing Spider-Man 3.

Next, Webb goes on to say that Woodley would probably be too busy with her current film project Divergent and the part of Mary Jane might need to be recast. Today’s news just might be the cherry on the top of this casting reversal sundae. Confirmed by ET Canada, Sarah Gadon has been attached in an unspecified role in The Amazing Spider-Man 3 leading many to think she is going to play the recast role of Mary Jane.

Do you think she will be the new Mary Jane? Is this a case of fast casting, or was all this decided and done well before any word of Woodley’s exit? Gadon could be playing a different role, but when you look at everything and how they link up, it looks like Woodley is out and Gadon is in to portray the lovely Mary Jane Watson.

Shailene Spider Man

Funnily enough, this news of Shailene Woodley‘s Mary Jane Watson not appearing in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 follows soon after the possible news Felicity Jones is playing Felicia Hardy, a.k.a. The Black Cat and Peter Parker love interest. Hmm, was Mary-Jane bumped to make room for Black Cat?

Here’s the quote from Woodley as it appears in the print edition of Entertainment Weekly where the actress was discussing her latest feature, Divergent,

Of course I’m bummed. But I am a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason… Based on the proposed plot, I completely understand the need for holding off on introducing [Mary Jane] until the next film.

And since we now know there’ll for sure be an Amazing Spider-Man 3 and 4 it seems the footage Woodley shot for TASM 2, specifically her meeting with current Parker flame, Emma Stone‘s Gwen Stacy, will come into play for the next film.

Which brings into question the fate of Stone’s Stacy. Something comic book fans will continue debating until TASM 2 releases. What do you think changed in the script that bumped Mary Jane’s brief appearance from TASM 2 to 3? Could it be the inclusion of The Black Cat? Or is Stacy hanging around longer than we thought? (So not sorry for that.)

Clearly, today is a day for Marvel movie news. So far we’ve seen the goods on Iron Man 3 featured in this month’s Empire Magazine and been to set of The Amazing Spider-Man sequel and seen a few shots of Andrew Garfield‘s stunt double in the new Spidey suit. What else could today offer? How about the first look at Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson!

We’re not sure whether she’s in costume or not, though I wouldn’t rule it out. Looks like something Mary Jane would wear, right? The photos come courtesy of Just Jared, as if you couldn’t tell, and were snapped where Amazing Spider-Man 2 is filming in New York City. What do you think of Spidey’s new red head? I wonder if Emma Stone is jealous she can’t sport her lovely red locks?

Apparently, some fans weren’t so happy with the direction Marc Webb took in designing Peter Parker’s costume in the latest Amazing Spider-Man reboot.  And while all comic movies are going to have little changes here and there, most directors just ignore the whining and let the hard core fanboys pout about it.  Webb, however, looks to be taking fans’ opinions into consideration, resulting in a slight change-up in Spidey’s costume for the upcoming sequel.

When broadcasting across the Internets via his Tweeter account, Webb had this to say about the new costume:

“Bigger eyes.  Gnarly web shooters.”

Okay… so I guess that means they’re going for something a little more like the comic series presents?  Though I’m at a complete loss as to understanding what makes a web-shooter “gnarly”.

As a side-note, Webb also confirmed that Shailene Woodley will definitely be showing up in the new flick in the role (however small it may be) of Mary Jane Watson.  Or, to put it in his own words:

“She’s the jam – lover her, look forward to working with her in ASM2.”

Yes, the man certainly has a way with words.  Of course, what else can you expect from a Twitter update?

Look for the Amazing Spider-Man sequel to hit theaters in about a year-and-a-half, on May 2nd of 2014.

The Amazing Spider-Man sequel is in the works and casting is already underway.  And since Mary Jane Watson certainly can’t go for too long without showing up in the newly rebooted franchise, she happens to be the first one getting some attention.  Currently in talks to take on this iconic role is actress (and hottie) Shailene Woodley, Golden Globe nominee for her role in The Descendants.

If she says yes, Woodley will be jumping on board with Amazing Spider-Man alumni Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, which could mean some serious conversation between her and Gwen.

Now THAT is some good side-boob.

In addition to Mary Jane, Marc Webb and crew are looking to find someone to take on the role of Harry Osborn and, if the rumors are true, Electro will end up in the mix as well.  Assuming Webb doesn’t switch things up too much, Green Goblin should be right around the corner, waiting to knock poor Gwen off in either the second or third film.

Look for Amazing Spider-Man 2 to hit theaters come May 2, 2014.

Possible-Female-Leads-for-Spider-Man

Looks like the upcoming Spider-Man reboot will have not one, but two female leads in the form of  Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy. According to Entertainment Weekly, it seems that Sony has Emma Stone (Zombieland, Easy A) as the front runner for the role of MJ (obviously) while Alice in Wonderland’s Mia Wasikowska is the front runner for the role of Gwen.

While I don’t mind Spidey having girls all over him, I don’t know if I want a triangle love story as it’s just not my thing. As far as casting goes, I think Stone is perfect to play a young MJ while Wasikowska (some one wants to help me learn how to pronounce this) may have the looks to give Gwen Stacy the cute, shy girl appearance. What do y’all think about this casting news? Are you happy with the idea of two female leads or did Spider-Man 3 ruined it for you that you don’t want it?
