Yesterday, news came out that Shailene Woodley‘s scenes in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 would be cut from the movie. The reason given at the time by director Marc Webb was so that the movie could focus solely on the relationship between Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) and Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone).
The latest news is that Woodley will not be showing up in any Spider-Man sequel and the Mary Jane part would likely be recast with another actress. The reason given being:
Woodley will likely be busy with the sequels to her upcoming sci-fi movie Divergent and may not be available, so the tole may have to be recast.
That’s got to be some kinda code for, Fan reaction wasn’t incredibly positive so we’re dumping her. Recasting the role because there is a “chance” the actress will be busy on another project is pure nonsense. Schedules can be juggled without that much issue. The creative decision to shift Mary Jane’s appearance to later sequels can be reasonably explained, the recasting IMHO is a little stickier.
Don’t worry though, Woodley will be just fine. She’s already gotten her paycheck for her work on the film and her other projects should continue to spotlight her fantastic acting talents.
What do you think about this move? Does this boil down to wanting a sexier Mary Jane, more model than actual acting talent, or perhaps a bigger name with more recognition?

Can there be just one single moment when these two are alone where they don’t fight over Spider-Man, even a plush version of the wall crawler? Guess not, but at least they know all sleep over fights must be done in your pajamas. *Special Note: If you know who drew this please tell us, we’ll credit them. [Hybrid Waste]

The Amazing Spider-Man sequel is in the works and casting is already underway. And since Mary Jane Watson certainly can’t go for too long without showing up in the newly rebooted franchise, she happens to be the first one getting some attention. Currently in talks to take on this iconic role is actress (and hottie) Shailene Woodley, Golden Globe nominee for her role in The Descendants.
If she says yes, Woodley will be jumping on board with Amazing Spider-Man alumni Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, which could mean some serious conversation between her and Gwen.
Now THAT is some good side-boob.
In addition to Mary Jane, Marc Webb and crew are looking to find someone to take on the role of Harry Osborn and, if the rumors are true, Electro will end up in the mix as well. Assuming Webb doesn’t switch things up too much, Green Goblin should be right around the corner, waiting to knock poor Gwen off in either the second or third film.
Look for Amazing Spider-Man 2 to hit theaters come May 2, 2014.

There have been many rumors about the female lead in the new Spiderman reboot, but we finally have a definitive answer. The Wrap reports that we will not be seeing Mary Jane’s delicious red tresses in the upcoming movie to be filmed, but merely Gwen Stacy played by the lovely Emma Stone. Originally there was an idea thrown around that both Mary Jane and Gen Stacy would be in this movie, creating a love triangle for Peter Parker, but the idea has been scrapped. That’s probably a good thing. Spidey has more important things to think about than stupid ol’ girls. This is what The Wrap had to say:
Meanwhile, an individual familiar with the project has told TheWrap that Mary Jane Watson will not appear in the film after all, as the character is not currently featured in James Vanderbilt’s screenplay, and apparently never was.
This rides along with the news that Sally Fields is in talks to play Aunt May in the reboot, though that is not anything definite yet. So as we keep getting more and more news about how the movie will be shaping up, how is everyone feeling about it? Excited, pissed off, ambivalent? Let us know in the comments.
