Director Robert Schwentke‘s R.I.P.D. has a new television spot making the Internet rounds. Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds star in this Buddy-Cop-Supernatural-Action-Adventure. They’re dead peace officers brought back to protect and serve the living from dangerous souls that refuse to move on to the after life.
The question is, can this movie garner enough audience to make a real run at making some Hollywood money? We know they’re going to draw in the Hellboy and comic reading crowd, but what about the average movie-goer?
The cast is well-rounded and has quite the list of fan favorites to draw on. We haven’t seen Kevin Bacon‘s role on-screen yet, but the production team is sure to make that a key point to draw in those not familiar with the comic.
Take a look and let us know what you think in the comments section below.
R.I.P.D. hits theater screens on July 19th, starring Ryan Reynolds, Jeff Bridges, Kevin Bacon, Mary-Louise Parker, Stephanie Szostak, Robert Knepper, James Hong, Marisa Miller, Mike O’Malley and Devin Ratray.
Red 2, the sequel to 2010 action-comedy, has yet to be released, but Summit Entertainment must really be banking on its success…seeing as they have green lit the development of Red 3.
Red 2 won’t be released in theaters until mid-July, but Summit refuses to sit on their hands waiting for the money to roll in. The studio has already rehired Red and Red 2 writers Jon and Erich Hoeber to begin development of the third installment based off the comic mini-series written by Warren Ellis. Details are scarce, as they would be for a sequel not even written yet, but the return of Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, and Mary Louise-Parker is a sure bet.
Even with something this early in development, the studio has already made the first step in the right direction, bringing Jon and Erich back to write. The duo made the first Red a successful adaptation and Red 2 should continue the trend of former government agents and Bruce Willis being Bruce Willis.
It’s been a while coming, but finally we have an official look at Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds in R.I.P.D. The adaptation of the Dark Horse comic comes from Universal, was directed by Robert Schwentke, and is expected to release on July 19th. So it’s about damn time we get a look at it! I imagine a trailer won’t be far behind.
This still comes courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, click the above image for a better look. I dig Bridges mustache. Not as spectacular as say, Christoph Waltz in Django Unchained, but still, it’s stylish.
Since it’s been a while since we heard anything about R.I.P.D., here’s a quick refresher,
Nick is dead — at least, that’s how he remembers it — and teams up with another deceased detective, a gunslinger from the Old West (played by Jeff Bridges), to work for the elite task force, the Rest In Peace Department (hence the title), to track down the dead on Earth. (Due to overpopulation, some unsettled spirits haven’t gone where they’re supposed to, and are hiding out). Technically, R.I.P.D. officers (who are overseen by Mary-Louise Parker) aren’t allowed to kill anyone living, and aren’t supposed to interact with anyone from their previous lives, but Nick is haunted by the fact that he was murdered by another cop (played by Kevin Bacon), and can’t let it go.
R.I.P.D. will also star Stephanie Szostak, Marisa Miller, Mike O’Malley, James Hong, Robert Knepper and Tobias Segal. What are ya thinking? Excited?
Dean Parisot‘s RED 2, the follow up sequel to the hit movie RED, (Retired-Extremely-Dangerous) based on the comic book by Warren Ellis and Cully Hammer has posted it’s first trailer. If this trailer is any indication, the sequel is set to be as fantastic a ride as the first. Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Mary-Louise Parker, Helen Mirren, and Karl Urban are all returning with the addition of Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Byung-Hun Lee, Neal McDonough and David Thewlis.
The gang of clandestine operative retirees are back, wrecking their way across Europe.
RED 2 will blow up theater screens starting August 2nd.
Those Retired & Extremely Dangerous agents from various secret government organizations are back for another round in Red II. Dean Parisot (Galaxy Quest) is directing with Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Mary-Louise Parker and Helen Mirren are reprising their roles. This time around the gang is taking on some European villains including Catherine Zeta-Jones, Byung-Hun Lee (G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra) and Anthony Hopkins.
The first film was a fun romp and I expect this one to carry on that tradition of humor laced with bullets and explosions. Check out some on set pictures of the cast.
Joining Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges in the upcoming film adaptaion of R.I.P.D. is one Mary-Louise Parker. You might remember her from a recurring role on The West Wing, fiesty, pot-dealing mom, Nancy on Weeds and her part in last year’s RED.
In R.I.P.D. she’ll be, “the woman overseeing the division who explains to Reynolds’ character what has happened when he dies.” Oh yeah, did I mention R.I.P.D. is about a police force of undead officers? Maybe I should have mentioned that. Reynolds is playing, Nick Cruz, a recently killed officer with plans to track down his murderers. Bridges is a wise, older member of the force who helps and mentors Cruz.
R.I.P.D was originally written by Peter Lenkov and was adapted for screen by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, with Neil H. Moritz. Currently being developed by Dark Horse Entertainment and produced by Mike Richardson, Ryan Reynolds and Jonathon Komack Martin, R.I.P.D. will open June 28th, 2013. So maybe, don’t start lining up just yet.
