Mass Effect 3

Each and every week we scour the Internet for nothing but the best in nerdy art. We leave no digital stone unturned, we poke and prod every nook and cranny of the Interwebz. Why? Because we love you, and we love to bring you weekly feed of nerd art. On with the dump!

J-Estacado must really love the work of famed pin-up artist Gil Elvgren, so much so that he made his own tribute piece to Gil with DC Comics Zatanna in place of Gil’s girls. He really nails it too, right down to the black negligee she has on in the tribute piece. Now that’s some real magic. [Nudity and Nerdery]

ABOVE: Prepare for The Hunger Games to begin popping up everywhere, it’s poised to explode fandom wise and this awesome cosplay is only the beginning. This flaming wedding dress comes up in the third novel, Mockingjay, so I’ve got no clue what is means but it sure looks great.

It was constructed using a vintage wedding dress base, to which I added a layer of fiery fabric to imitate the dress in flames, then black feather boas for the black feathers. I also added the sheer sleeves and veil piece as well. I’m not sure if it’s visible, but there are also faux pearls strung along the neckline.

In the wake of one of the biggest potential riots in gaming history, BioWare has officially issued a statement to address fans’ concerns that the endings to their Mass Effect 3 game sucks balls.

The recent turmoil has resulted in complaints, name-calling and a social media campaign aimed at rallying support to get Mass Effect’s creators to “fix” the game.  One individual even went so far as to file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission, stating that BioWare used false advertising regarding the ending to their widely popular trilogy.

Dr. Ray Muzyka, co-founder of BioWare, posted his statement on the official game-studio blog, telling fans that those at the company were looking into the complaints and planned to address them in some, as-of-yet unspecified way.

Highlights of the statement include Muzyka’s claims that:

“…Exec Producer Casey Hudson and the team are hard at work on a number of game content initiatives that will help answer the questions, providing more clarity for those seeking further closure to their journey.”

And:

“This is in addition to our existing plan to continue providing new Mass Effect content and new full games…”

While this is a little vague in terms of what BioWare actually plans to do, they have promised another statement sometime in April that will go into more detail.  Whether this means that they’re going to add a new ending that fans won’t cry about remains to be seen.

Can BioWare really balance the integrity of their creation, the hard work of its creators and the self-obsessed needs of the fans and still come out smelling like roses?  Will they simply cave in to the demands of their disgruntled fans?  Should people just suck it up and enjoy what the company has made instead of trying to re-write it to please themselves?

In essence, does Mass Effect 3 actually need a new ending, or are those fans just being a bunch of whiney bitches?

The world has become a place where the release of new games is a momentous event to those hardcore fans who must have them at minute one and finish them before work the next day.  Midnight releases are a standard of the industry and the widely popular Mass Effect 3 is no exception.

The Mass Effect series is known for its deeply interactive system whereby players’ decisions have serious impacts on the outcome of the game.  This effect is more than just whether the player wins or loses, but how the story winds up.

The third in the series was released but a few short weeks ago, on March 6th.  Less than 10 days later, the game has already begun to make waves with fans of the series everywhere who claim that the endings provided in Mass Effect 3 have destroyed their gamer-geek Zen and left them feeling hollow inside.

Never mind the years of work that have gone into the three chapters of the game.  Ignore the fact that whole teams of programmers, writers and artists have put their blood, sweat and tears into creating what was, until a week ago, a masterpiece of gaming.  No, these things do not matter when the fans are up-in-arms.

In fact, lovers of the game are so pissed-off that they are demanding a new ending!

So why are the available endings so unpopular?

Well, apparently what happens in the grand finale is not representative enough of the freedom that fans have had thus far in controlling the fate of the universe.  Without giving away too much, the endings are amazingly similar to each other, even to the point of using the same cut-scenes throughout.  The hard work that fans put into finishing Mass Effect 3 is not reflected in the outcome and there are some debates over whether certain characters should have died or not.

The dissatisfaction has grown so strong that a movement has even been formed to lobby against the producers of the game and demand a new ending.

The movement in question, “Retake Mass Effect 3” has been raising donations for a children’s charity (a whopping $30,000 so far!) and collecting “likes” on Facebook to demonstrate their collective strength.  They hope that this solidarity will convince the creators of the game that they have disappointed fans, killed their profits and hurt their own franchise.

Response from opposition team-leader and director of Mass Effect, Casey Hudson, says that the controversial ending was intentional and that they had been planning it for some time.  A statement of artistic integrity, though not enough to calm the outrage of the “Retake” movement.

After watching the following video, you may find that the endings do indeed look a little bit similar, minus some color changes.  Check it out and see what you think of it.

SPOILER ALERT!

If you were watching the Oscars last night, kick yourself right now since you missed this. A new live action trailer for BioWare’s Mass Effect 3 premiered during The Walking Dead. Wait, this is a video game? I wish it was a movie or a TV show so I could watch it. Hell, I wish it was a woman so I could make sweet love to her and then afterwards we’d drink beer and get a pizza, maybe play some video games ’cause she would be just that damn cool.

Hit the jump to watch it for yourself.
