This fall will see the beginning of Jodie Whittaker‘s tenure as the 13th Doctor. Regardless of arguments about if 13 is the appropriate number for her Doctor (after the meta-crisis and War Doctor, etc.), there has been quite a bit of uncertainty and outright hatred from some fan circles for a female Doctor.
However, Doctor Who has long implied this was not only possible but probable. When David Tennant regenerated into Matt Smith, Matt touches his hair and says, “I’m a girl!!!” before finding his adam’s apple.
In the episode “The Doctor’s Wife” the Doctor says,
“The mark of the Corsair. Fantastic bloke. He had that snake as a tattoo in every regeneration. Didn’t feel like himself unless he had the tattoo. Or herself, a couple of times. Ooo, she was a bad girl.”
In Peter Capaldi’s episode “Hell Bent” he shoots the General who regenerates as a woman.
So the groundwork has been laid for gender switching, but there is a more significant indicator that all will be well with a female Doctor. The Time Ladies that preceded Jodie.
Here are a few of the beloved female “Time Lords” from the Classic and New Who runs of the show.
Anyone who watched the new episode of this ninth series (more commonly referred to as “season” by folks who don’t know/understand much about the overall Doctor Who TV saga) knows full well that it didn’t take very long for showrunner Steven Moffatt and his crew to plant their flag in the “OMG” ground. The opening title of the show hadn’t even hit yet, and viewers were already treated to a major bomb being dropped and the promise of a wacky and wild ride to kick off the new slate of episodes. The BBC has released a prologue for Series 9 (Yeah, Yeah, Series 9 not Season 9 I get it, I get it.) that poses a hell of a lot more questions than it answers. Not that I expected any answers, that’s not the Doctor’s (Peter Capaldi) style or Modus operandi. We do get to see Clarie Higgins back as Ohila, the High Priestess from The Night of the Doctor. I’ve embedded that short below as well. Are you ready to get back in the TARDIS for Series 9? (more…)
Peter Capaldi‘s Doctor Who is back on September 19th as the series enters its 9th season under show-runner Steven Moffatt. The first episode The Magiacian’s Apprentice finds Clara (Jenna Coleman) in need of the good Doctor’s help when Earth’s skies are frozen by an unknown alien race. The problem? No one can find the Doctor, but as Clara says in the trailer below, “If anyone can find him it’s me.” (more…)
This season of Doctor Who is definitely one that grew stronger the longer it went on. Much of that was in allowing Peter Capaldi to grow more comfortable in his role as the Twelfth Doctor, and for him and Jenna Coleman to find their rhythm as Doctor and companion. But there were also the slowly developing threads linking The Doctor, Clara, Danny (Samuel Anderson), and eventually, Missy (Michelle Gomez) that once fully exposed made series 8’s finale so powerful.
