As you’re no doubt aware, there was a major movie awards ceremony this weekend and Fantastic Four, one of the most talked about genre flicks from last year, won and won big, picking up a slew of trophies including the (not) coveted main prize. A more deserving winner we can’t think of. Also, we had the Oscars. (more…)
Wasn’t Harrison Ford great in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, everyone? A legendary actor once again playing his most legendary role. But while Ford accepts praise for his portrayal of the older, but not remotely frail, Han Solo, the corporate overlords that own the rights to the character at Lucasfilm and the Walt Disney Company are currently looking for a younger model Han Solo to star in the second standalone Star Wars movie following Rogue One. From many, comes one, or at least in this case a dozen or so. Sources are telling one Hollywood trade that there’s now a short list for the new Han Solo, and the reason for the immediacy of casting the part may be surprising. (more…)
Although it lacks the cultural and financial punch of either Twilight or The Hunger Games film series, Divergent marches on to its inevitable two-part conclusion thanks to nearly $600 million in global box office sales for part one and part two. Insurgent was released earlier this year, and it included a number of particular revelations that blows up the concept of the series, and takes it into the grand, wide open world beyond the wall around post-apocalyptic Chicago. So what adventures await Tris, Four and the rest of the gang? Read the book! Or, better still, check out the first trailer for Allegiant below. (more…)
It’s been over a month since the release of Josh Trank‘s Fantastic Four, and fans are still shell shocked by the experience. In an age of near-over saturation of comic book movies, Fantastic Four was a rare misstep that managed to anger comic book fans, critics and regular old moviegoers. In fact, the reception for FF ’15 was worse than that for Tim Story‘s 2005 film about Marvel’s First Family, which the Trank film was supposed to eclipse in terms of legacy and cultural relevance. But if you were disappointed by Fantastic Four, you’re not alone, the actress that played the Invisible Woman was disappointed by the experience too. (more…)
MOVIE REVIEW: ‘Fantastic Four’ is a Different Kind of Superhero Movie – But Still Not a Very Good One
Fantastic Four. I wanted to like it. I really did.
I actually found all the pre-release roller-coaster drama of the production’s ups and downs really intriguing. The idea for the creation of this movie was heavily maligned from the start; according to 20th Century Fox’s deal with Marvel, if they wanted to keep the rights to the FF franchise, then the company has to make a new film featuring the characters every decade or so, or else the rights will revert back to Marvel. Since it’s been eight painful years since the Galactus-bastardizing head-scratcher Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Fox felt obligated to pump another one out. Trust me, however, when I tell you: don’t feel obligated to go see this film.
Another trailer leak? First Batman Vs. Superman, and now trailer leak number 2; which is all about the number four – The Fantastic Four. After 20th Century Fox’s Fantastic Four remake had its trailer leaked this morning, FOX decided to make the official version available online. What’s so special about this trailer? Along with new footage and more backstory, we get our first look at Victor Domashev, more recognizable perhaps by the name of “Dr. Doom”. (more…)
Fantastic Four: this movie’s production team has just about done everything they could to alienate fans in the way information, on set pictures, and the often dreaded Social Media reactions were handled during its production. Now that we’re finally seeing some actual footage and getting to hear from director Josh Trank, who has been surprisingly silent during production, many of those on the fence about the movie might at least give it a chance at the box office. The real problem might be: Is it too little too late? (more…)
I haven’t read the Divergent books, which is a rare position for me to be in. I had read all the Harry Potters, all the Twilights and all The Hunger Games before seeing the movies, but I don’t think I made it though 20 pages of Divergent before wanting to move on to something else. That’s not a commentary on Vanessa Roth‘s prose, but a sign that Divergent is a bridge too far. This is a road we’ve been down, a story that’s been retold one too many times, and even though the details are different, they all basically add up the same whole: chosen one rebels against Draconian system and leads friends and comrades to a better future free of evil and oppression. Cotumes are a sensitive topic when it comes to superhero properties; get it right and you’ve got it made in the shade, but get it wrong, like in the case of David E. Kelly’s Wonder Woman pilot for example, and you’re sunk before you even get a chance to float. Two upcoming superhero projects are at the forefront of the costume question, as both having seemingly embraced some unconventional duds for their main characters. The trailer for the Fantastic Four movie shows the titular quartet looking positively “Derelique,” while the Man Without Fear in Daredevil looks like the man without imagination dressed in basic black. But are these heroes due for a costume change mid-story? Cast and crew say, “Yes.” (more…)
If you’ve been absolutely anxious about getting another taste of the upcoming new and improved Fantastic Four, let us wet your whistle is four new character-based images, and a new interview with the director. Try to hold back your excitement. Fan interest about this new FF hasn’t seen the fever pitch that’s greeted other comic book-based movie projects lately, even by Rise of the Silver Surfer standards, but the revelation of the trailer last month at least promised a movie with a strong sense of style. Granted that style was lifted wholesale from Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, but it’s style just the same. After such a long wait for any hint about what the film might look like, the trailer was certainly provocative. The below character photos though, not so much. (more…)
