Joss Whedon’s S.H.I.E.L.D. television project is underway and rumors put an airing date for next year.  But before shooting begins, the show needs a cast, right?  As it turns out, the top secret organization has just managed to secure its 6th and final agent.  Her name is Agent Skye and she’ll be played by Chloe Bennet of ABC’s Nashville.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the character of Skye is “…a confident woman who is slightly obsessed with superhero culture and the shadow organizations that exist within it. She’s edgy and can out-talk anyone with her unflappable nature…”

Well, there’s not much to be said for character descriptions this early on, especially when every single one of them sounds like a bad cop show stereotype.  Let’s hope Whedon breathes some new life into them so we don’t just end up watching CSI: Marvel.

Together with agents Melinda May (Ming-na), Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), Gemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge), Leo Fitz (Ian De Caestecker) and Phil “It’s just a flesh wound” Coulson (Clark Gregg), the S.H.I.E.L.D. team is ready to go clean up some super hero bullshit.

Thanks to /film for the heads-up.

Sometime after the new year, production will begin on the pilot for ABC’s S.H.I.E.L.D., the proposed series about the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division, the fictional law enforcement agency from Marvel Universe movies. The pilot is being co-written, co-executive produced and directed by Avengers mastermind Joss Whedon.

Well throughout the development process there’s been a question of when exactly the show will premiere, will it be Fall of 2013, or maybe midseason? Perhaps a summer launch date? Who knows.

Well, Jeph Loeb knows. He is the head of Marvel TV after all, and he told Previewsworld.com that Marvel, Disney and the network ABC are looking at getting S.H.I.E.L.D. ready as early as next Fall.

“Well…we have a ‘little’ pilot for television that you might have heard about called Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D. co-written, directed, and Executive Produced by none other than Joss Whedon!” Loeb said, adding,”Working with Joss, Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen, Jeffrey Bell on the show is a blast!  And bringing in Clark Gregg to play Agent Phil Coulson — the best!  Hopefully we will be on in the Fall of 2013 on ABC!

Along with Gregg, the series will feature a cast made up of Ming-Na, Iain De Caestecker and Elizabeth Henstridge. But what about The Man himself, Samuel L. Jackson. He does play S.H.I.E.L.D. head Nick Fury after all, so how can you have a S.H.I.E.L.D. show without Fury. Only Jackson knows for sure.

“I don’t know. I keep hearing about it, and I haven’t talked to Joss about it,” Jackson told MTV. “But in my mind, I would tend to think that he would, if nothing else, be like Charlie in ‘Charlie’s Angels.’ At least be the voice!”

That sounds cool. Pun intended. We’ll keep you posted with all the latest S.H.I.E.L.D. developments.

The Hollywood Reporter is saying that the cast of Joss Whedon‘s upcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot just got bigger by two with the addition of British actors Elizabeth Henstridge and Ian De Caestecker. Henstridge will play scientist Agent Gemma Simmons, while De Caestecker will play Agent Leo Fitz, a techno-whiz. Both actors will join the previously cast Ming-Na and Clark Gregg in the proposed ABC series.

Now before you say, “who the heck are Elizabeth Henstridge and Ian De Caestecker?” you should know that they are relative newcomers. Henstridge’s credits include the TV Movie Shelter, and the features Delicacy and The Thompsons.  De Caestecker, meanwhile, has a bit more of a high-profile resume with appearances on the long-running British soap Cornonation Street and the film Little Vampires. More recently, he appeared on the series The Fades and Lip Service.

Apparently the two characters Simmons and Fitz spend a lot of time together, and given their mutually nerdiness can we assume that there might be some shipping afoot with this pair if the show goes to series? Or are they the Willow and Xander of the show? Platonic sidekicks backing up the hero at the drop of a hat? And, oh yeah, what’s the deal with Coulson going to be?

More news as it develops.

It seems that ABC is chomping at the bit to get S.H.I.E.L.D., a new series based on the spy organization that’s central to the Marvel Comics and series of films, on its airwaves in the very near future.

Variety’s Marc Graser tweeted today that the series’ pilot will begin shooting this coming January, a mere five months after the series was first announced. We know that Ming-Na has been cast as lead character Agent Melinda May, at that she will be joined by Avengers actor Clark Gregg who’s returning as Agent Phil Coulson (at least we think it’s Coulson returning), so if the network is aiming for a January shoot date, expect more casting announcements very, very soon. And also expect to see it on the Fall 2013 TV schedule, if not before (?).

Avengers screenwriter and director Joss Whedon will direct the pilot and co-write it with his brother Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, who worked on Dr Horrible and Dollhouse with the Whedon Brothers. The series will be produced by the Whedons, Tancharoen, Jeffrey Bell and Jeph Loeb.

More news as it develops.
