Captain America: The Winter Soldier enjoyed a very successful run at the box office, and for good reason.  The Marvel Studios movie was a very well written espionage flick that just happened to have a superhero or two at the center of the plot. More importantly, the movie was a game changer for the Marvel Cinematic Universe that revealed that absolutely no one could be trusted.  SFX Magazine recently sat with the screenwriters of the hit sequel to find out where the series might go from here.  If they get their wishes, there will be plenty of Marvel fans who will love the next Captain America entry. Every day the internet produces an astounding amount of goodies and gems. Most hilarious, some amusing, but all worth at least a few seconds of your time. We here at Nerd Bastards try to bring you the best bits of news and nerdery the webz has to offer, with a bit of snark thrown in. But sometimes not everything makes the cut. Monday through Friday we’ll be bringing you our inbox leftovers, our forgotten bookmarks, the nerdy bits that simply slipped through the cracks. You can submit items to Nerdy Bits by emailing us at

ABOVE: 5 nerds took 10 months of planning, purchasing, and research and two months of actual construction to make this multi person Voltron cosplay. Voltron, defender of virginity.  [Neatorama]

It was a dark and stormy morning at Dragon Con. OK, it wasn’t dark and it was only a light drizzle of rain, but MODOK made the smart decision to get into the STG – Boy Genius panel line early. Earlier in the Con Wil Wheaton had announced that he really didn’t want to do an hour of STG talk and would tell the “William F@#%ing Shatner” story with Paul and Storm.

The panel started with this:

Yep, Wheaton proceeded to “Cos” Play Cosby on STG, with the Plasma and the pudding pops. “That’s a $25 dollar joke folks.” After some back and forth between Wheaton and Paul and Storm about the cost of said joke, an attractive brunnette in a Mirror Universe, midriff exposed, Star Trek costume stood up from the front row and handed Wheaton $25 to subsidize that routine.

After removing the sweater Wil called out for “THE CAPE OF DICKS.” Here’s the 2011 PAX video where Wil received the cape.

There was much pomp and ceremony when Wil donned the Cape of Dicks. The donning ceremony ended with Wil saying:

“If you find yourself offended by the Cape of Dicks, you should probably leave before I start talking.”

Then began the epic story of Wheaton’s first meeting with “William F@#%ing Shatner.” (This is a previously performed version, MODOK’s video recorder failed epically.)

Wil then sat down with Garret Wang of Voyager fame and the current Dragon Con Trek Track Director. There were the usual questions until Wil was asked if he would sign a woman’s boob. Wil said why not and proceeded to autograph that boob.

About 4 questions later a guy stepped up to the mic and asked the same question.

The panel wrapped up and every filed out. Wheaton is very fast on his feet while on stage and really gives a great show. While MODOK was walking back to another hotel at the convention he ended up walking through the rain just behind . . .

Yes, that is Wil Wheaton in the Cape of Dicks walking in the rain back to the hotel for his time signing at the Walk of Fame. Even Internet greats get rained on. It was suprisingly fitting that Wil was kept dry by the Cape of Dicks.

Here are some other pictures of Cosplay that missed the last post.

MODOK began to lose his sense of time and space as the weekend progressed. Days blurred, panel lines stretched into infinity, and a 12 oz Diet Coke for $2 and a ham and cheese sandwich for $8 started to look like a great deal. MODOK would like to mention something that has not gotten a lot of press that really made Dragon Con fun, sparking laughter, conversations, and general good feelings.

Dragon Con TV – Surprisingly funny, and entertaining. Taking cues from and using Adult Swim style show bumpers, Dragon Con TV made some great shorts about conventions and the people that attend them. These helped entertain the panel crowds while seating and setup occurred.

There was also some great shorts by Sci-Fi Janitors. These guys are very funny and the shorts are fantastic.

MODOK would apologize for having t0o much fun at Dragon Con and not posting MODOK’s Adventures in a timely manner, except for the simple fact that

Saturday was full of great fun starting with the Dragon Con Parade. The folks over at posted a great video of the parade that captured the festival atmosphere of the parade.

Saturday evening was a costume bonanza in the hotel lobbies. The gender switch costumes are big this year with plenty of great female Han Solo and male Disney Princesses.

Then it happened . . . MODOK found his minions and there was great rejoicing and much picture taking.

A.I.M. Scientist Soldiers!

These guys were great fun and a big hit for those walking around the hotel lobbies. There are a ton more pictures to post as well as a treasure trove from a friends shots. Once the Con is over and MODOK has a chance to breath MODOK will post a couple of galleries of the best, funniest, and most creative costumes.

MODOK needs rest now. There’s a panel that MODOK will have to line up for around 7AM to make sure MODOK gets in.

Day two started out with a trip to the post office to pick up the box of goodies sent to MODOK by NerdBastards. Armed with NerdBastard stickers MODOK drove downtown to get the party started. For those who have never been to the South (Yes that should be capitalized, and said proudly with a drawl.), the heat is a wet heat, full strength humidity.

The streets and sidewalks around the hotels were already packed with people, pick a color and someone had that color hair. Costumes were in full swing and some great groups were posing in the lobbies. MODOK heard his name called and was soon having his picture taken.

I haven’t done much Cosplay, I’ve to got to tell you that it was very satisfying to have people yell MODOK! and then ask to take my picture. I kept trying to give them my best MODOK scowl, but mostly I just grinned like an idiot. Oh yes, that Cosplay is very hot after a few minutes and I was wiping sweat out of my eyes. I’ll never laugh at any actor that has to wear full makeup on their face and head again, it does get claustrophobic after a bit. The sweating pretty much killed my idea of having anyone else wear the MODOK head to take pictures. I wouldn’t want my worst enemy to have to put that sweaty thing on after me.

Back to the feeling I got when people enjoyed my costume. I think I have a better understanding of those people that really go all out on their costumes. I’ve done costumes before but never gotten the responses that I received today, it was a heady experience.

Now MODOK feels that he should show you some of what he saw today. There are more pictures coming as soon as a good friend of MODOK emails them. Mike has some great pictures that we’ll be putting into a Dragon Con 2011 Cosplay Feast. Yes FEAST, not FEST. These ladies and gentlemen are a feast for the Cosplay eyes.

Yes, that is Wil Wheaton in all his glory. The Guild panel that Wil ended up moderating was a fantasticly fun hour of questions and stories. I found Wil later at the Walk of Fame and got an autograph and picture.

More of MODOK’s Adventures tomorrow.

MODOK here, formally known as Mark Poynter, writer for NerdBastards and now Supreme Ruler of AIM and your next World Overlord. MODOK began his campaign to rule the world by attending Dragon Con 2011. What better place to build my band of absolutely loyal minions?

MODOK’s day began with a smooth trip to the Dragon Con Media Realations Room where he was greeted with much fanfare and smiles by the Dragon Con Media Group. The DCMG quickly determined that they stood no chance against the might of MODOK and proceeded to promptly give MODOK his press packet containing the vitally important Dragon Con Badge and assorted media paperwork. Armed with his badge and green press ribbon, MODOK proceeded out to survey the weekends field of battle.

Captain America was a summer time hit and plans for the second installment in the hopefully long series of sequels is in the script writing stages. “Captain America – First Avenger” co-writer Christopher Markus has been kicking around an idea that this NerdBastard can get behind because it involves two of my favorites. Markus said:

“I love MODOK and I think you could make a terrifying movie with MODOK but nobody seems to be on my side at the moment.”

Markus is referring to MODOK, the outrageously weird villain created by the cabal of mad scientists AIM (Advanced Idea Mechanics). MODOK’s name is an acronym for Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing. Stan, Jack, and all those early Marvel creaters loved acronyms, they were mad for them!

Markus also has his first choice for casting, “Game of Thrones” star Peter Dinklage:

“I will win you over to Peter Dinklage as MODOK. If he came around the corner and you saw him floating there you would be terrified. It would be amazing.”

Markus went on to say:

”In this movie, the great thing is [the visual effects and makeup team] really pulled off the Red Skull. It doesn’t look like a mask. it looks like it’s fully integrated into his flesh. And I want to see what they can do with MODOK.”

This NerdBastard would love to see Dinkladge as MODOK in the next Captain America movie. He would nail it! Considering that Arnim Zola was in the first movie and lived through it, he could easily come back in the sequel and be tied into the creation of MODOK.
