Nickelodeon’s hype train of millennial nostalgia doesn’t seem to be dying down. Fans said “bring back the old shows,” and it seems like Nick is finally listening. Though many were disappointed with the trailer for theLegends of the Hidden Temple TV movie, the faithful designs released for the upcoming Hey Arnold!movie still have 90’s kids as optimistic as ever. With series creator Craig Bartlett set to write the film, the long-awaited Hey Arnold! movie: The Jungle seems to be just the return to form that the network needs. As if the new Hey Arnold movie wasn’t enough, Nickelodeon announced today that another famous Nicktoon is coming back from the days of Dunkaroos and Planters Cheez Balls and onto your flat-screen TV. (Special thanks to Nerd Bastard contributor Veronique Medrano for dropping a deuce on this revived Voltron series. Is nothing from the 80’s sacred?)
Nicktoons has released the first promo trailer for its new series titled Voltron Force which will be released June 16. The intro is nice, and some of the graphics are eye-catching, but what the graphics do not make up for the poor quality of the promo as whole. Those of you interested in what the heck Voltron Force is well it’s as follows: the show is made of 26 episodes that follow five space explorers who pilot robotic lions that combine to form Voltron. This robotic giant is sworn to defend the Universe, and it is stated that the show will remain faithful to the old one while introducing new original characters.
But to be brutally honest, Nicktoons obviously wasted too much money on the promos graphics, and splattered it all over like a stream of vomit from the Exorcist. After watching well produced shows like Avatar, Jimmy Neutron, The Fairly Oddparents, Spongebob Squarepants, and many other Nicktoons productions this seems to fall way short from the quality mark. The mixing of animation styles between the robots and the human is atrocious, and by putting quick clips that flash for a couple seconds TWICE seems really damn annoying and doesn’t help develop interest in the show. To make matters worse they have an incredibly horrendous Voltron Rap called Let’s Voltron on their official site. Warning to anyone interested in seeing or hearing this song may have the urge to gag! The video for the song has a Grandma randomly bopping down the street to this song…puhlease! Mine would find that music annoying real quick.
This show ultimately gets a pre-rating of: Watch at your own risk!
It seems like only days ago we gave you a first look at character designs for the newest series based on the classic 80s toon, Voltron: Defender of the Universe. The new animated Nicktoons series, Voltron Force, is schedule to premiere this Spring with 26 episodes. And if a new series wasn’t enough robot-cats-kickin’-ass-as-a-giant-mech action we’ll be seeing quite a bit of Voltron,
Beyond the 26-episode show that’s slated to debut this Spring, a live-action feature film is in development; there will be comic books from Dynamite; an art book from Moonstone; and video games from THQ, among other products.
It’s going to be a shiny future for children of 80s action toons. Take a look at all the promo and storyboard images after the cut.
Everything old is new again. Eh, that’s just a fancy way of saying “we’re out of ideas”. Reboots, revamps, rehashes in movies and television and so on, are often received with a hand to mouth fart noise. Daring to touch an original piece of magnificence is rarely received with a thunderous applause. With that said, I think I might actually be looking forward to the new Voltron animated series coming to Nicktoons in the spring.
I grew up watching Voltron in the 80’s and loved the shit out of it. Of course, I was like 6 years old. 5 five space explorers who pilot robotic lions that combine to form Voltron, an invincible guardian sworn to defend the Universe. What kid wouldn’t go ape shit over that? Like any child of the 80’s, shows like Voltron hold a very special place in my nerd heart. If I see a classic cartoon like that get brought to life for a new generation I’m going to be a little critical. Tend to have a knee-jerk reaction to any reboot.
However, ‘Voltron Force’ promises to be faithful to the old show. The classic characters are back but joined by some new cadets who will train under the original team. Aiming to offer something for my generation as well for the kiddies of today.
Some character designs for the “Lions” have just been released on the Voltron Facebook Page and they’re looking pretty rad. I actually like how each lion has it’s own distinct personality. Better yet, they’re not goddamn CGI. HIT THE JUMP AND CHECK EM’ OUT.
It’s too early to judge, but ‘Voltron Force’ is on my nerd radar.I just hope they get Peter Cullen to do the voice over in the show’s intro again.
Did anyone even like Voltron when it started using the Dairugger XV scenes? You know, the vehicle version of Voltron? Yea, I didn’t think so. Well, for years there has been talks for a Voltron movie and now we learned that the project is dead. The project had writer Justin Marks (Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li) and Max Malowski, who pretty much have TV Directorial experience.
Just like it was announced a few months ago, WB will be doing a new 26 episode cartoon series of Voltron. The show will air on Nicktoons and be titled Voltron Force, instead of the Voltron: Panthera Force and we’ll see the original pilots fighting alongside with new character to face the forces of evil. Of course, there will be a new toy line from Mattel to coincide with the cartoon series. Expect the show to air sometime in 2011.
Well, does the news of no movie make some of ya’ll happy seeing how the most movies based on our childhood hasn’t really been good. Also, does the news of a new cartoon do anything for ya? Tell us what ya think.
Well folks, tonight is the night when we the filler free Dragon Ball Z story. That’s right, no Garlic Jr., no fake Namek, and any other pointless filler. Right now in Japan, Kai will start the Androids saga this coming Sunday at episode 58, which in Z it would be episode 126. Anyway, at 8 P.M. Eastern, Nicktoons will have an hour of the fast pace action and unfortunately it will be censored. The reason to check it out though is because of the all new dub script, in which it’ll be much closer to the Japanese script. Check after the jump to hear the English theme song of Dragon Soul and some clips from the show so that you know what to expect. For the folks that doesn’t get Nicktoons, can wait till later this year for Kai to air on CW’s fall line up or pick up the first boxset that is out now and available for DVD and Blu-Ray. (more…)
