Still riding the high from Saturday’s basically-every-mutant-ever-reunion at FOX‘s Hall H panel (Watch it here!) it only pleases me more to learn Charles Xavier, the younger, James McAvoy will play Dr. Victor Von Frankenstein in – surprise! – FOX’s Frankenstein. I wonder how they came upon such a hot, rising young star?

McAvoy will be joining Daniel Radcliffe, already cast as Igor, for the Paul McGuigan directed adaptation. The nature of this adaptation is still unknown. Will it be farcical, trying to recapture the humor of Young Frankenstein? (Blasphemy!) Or will it try and put an edgier spin on the classic, gothic tale like the unfortunate Van Helsing? Either way, I’m intrigued, if only to see McAvoy and Radcliffe together. And McGuigan is a sublime director, working on pictures like Gangster No. 1 and Lucky Number Slevin as well as several episodes of Sherlock (“A Study in Pink”, “The Great Game”, “A Scandal in Belgravia”, “The Hounds of Baskerville”).

What do you think of McAvoy as Frankenstein? Excited at all about this project? Are we about the inundated with Frankenstein films, what with the upcoming I, Frankenstein and the long rumored Guillermo del Toro adaptation?

The artist formally known as Harry Potter continues to try new things on stage and on screen as Variety is reporting today that Daniel Radcliffe was signed up to join a new production of Frankenstein, but not as either the monster or the titular doctor. Instead, Radcliffe will play Igor in the new film written by Max Landis (World War Z) and directed by Paul McGuigan (Lucky Number Slevin).

So why Igor? As Landis explained in an earlier interview in 2011, Igor is actually the main character in his Frankenstein. Here’s what Landis had to say about his approach to the material:

I began to pick apart our knowledge of Frankenstein and discovered that the public’s idea of this myth comes from a million different places…I became committed to recontextualizing it all so it all worked in one story. By the end of the day, yeah it’s a period piece, yes it’s from Igor’s perspective, but man it’s cool….it’s the best thing I’ve written.

Landis’ Frankenstein is set-up at 20th Century Fox and is expected to begin shooting this fall after Radcliffe finishes his run in the theatrical Cripple of Inishmaan.

More news as it develops.

Vampires are on their way out and zombies are flooding the television airwaves, but there’s one classic monster that just doesn’t seem to get any play these days – Frankenstein’s monster.  This classic of the horror genre has been sitting on the shelf for damn near 20 years, ever since Kenneth Branagh’s lukewarm adaptation back in 1994.  But it looks like Fox will be reviving the square-headed behemoth in the near future.

They’ve already signed on Max Landis (Chronicle) to write the script and the latest news has Paul McGuigan (Push, Sherlock) in talks to direct.  Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) was previously attached to the project, but I guess he wanted too much money and Fox wants to keep their budget down.  And besides, if his past films are any indicator, there would have been no reason to watch it should he have been in charge.

So far, the only details concerning the new version are that they want to give it a sci-fi spin and focus on the themes of “friendship and redemption”.  So this may not be your grandfather’s Frankenstein.  Luckily, Landis is reported to be hard-core into the project so hopefully Fox won’t try to launch ol’ Frankie into space or have him fight aliens or some shit like that.

Being a fan of Mary Shelley’s original book and (some) of the movies, I’d love to see what they can do with a small budget and more emphasis on story as opposed to special effects.  If they can manage to make a damn good script, we may just see a damn good Frankenstein movie.

Thanks to ComicBookMovie for the heads-up.
