The new Mulan trailer has dropped and I, for one, am hype. A culturally adept film with an all Asian cast about a Chinese badass warrior woman? Sign me the heck up.
Unfortunately, not everyone feels the same way.
In the comments of the new trailer, on YouTube and Facebook, most people voiced lukewarm feelings or outright distaste for the film’s changes. After all, unlike most of the Disney remakes, the movie plans to change quite a bit. Mulan will be more culturally accurate, will not be a musical, and will not have the talking animal characters it once had. People seem to be really up in arms about no “Girl Worth Fighting For” or Mushu.
Recently, there has also been a big internet hullabaloo about Disney executives picking a black actor to play Ariel. There is a fair amount of speculation if a lot of that uproar was manufactured for free press. Either way, there is a big controversy around the upcoming The Little Mermaid film now instead of excited buzz.
The upcoming Disney remake of Pete’s Dragon is so different from the original that without that title, many people might not even know there’s a connection. While most remakes that stray from the original material suffer from that move, Pete’s Dragon looks so much better for it. From all appearances in the trailers and clips, director David Lowery has created a tale that will capture the hearts of both children and adults, weaving themes that all age groups can appreciate in their own way. Take a look. (more…)
A new trailer for David Lowery‘s remake of the classic 1977 film Pete’s Dragon has been released by Walt Disney Pictures, as well as some brand new movie stills! If the trailer is any indication, Lowery (who has also directed Ain’t Them Bodies Saints) has taken major creative liberties in his retelling of this tale. It seems to be a completely different creature (no pun intended) than the original, with little to no likeness in the plot-line. The movie does look like a very interesting re-imagining, you just might have to remind yourself at the beginning that it’s the titular character of Pete you’re seeing; not Mowgli. (more…)
It’s been a good 40 years since we first saw Elliott of the 1977 film Pete’s Dragon, but true fans will remember how he had “The head of a camel, the neck of a crocodile,” and that “He’s both a fish and a mammal.” According to the teaser trailer released last year, however, Elliott is looking a little different these days. Largely CGI, the new and improved Elliott will be covered in fur and, from the looks of the promo image, walking on all fours. The overall effect seems more like a lion or a tiger than a dragon, but there are a lot more complex components to this creature. (more…)
It’s taken three years since the film was announced but the first teaser for Pete’s Dragon, Disney‘s remake of their own live action and cartoon kid-friendly hit from 1977, has now dropped . As with the original, it tells the tale of Pete, a young orphan who has managed to survive alone in the woods with the help of his friend Elliot, who just happens to be a invisible dragon. (more…)
