The untitled young Han Solo movie is still a solid year-and-a-half away from being released, but as the calendar winds down to a likely production start date for early in the new year, we will surely start to hear more about it. One thing’s for certain though, and that thing is that directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord are not to be underestimated. Combining animation and live-action has been a technically and fascinating point of interest in the history of filmmaking whether we’re talking about Mary Poppins, Who Framed Roger Rabbit? or even Space Jam, but in recent years and the rise of CGI and motion capture, the lines that separate the two have been blurred. The guys who brought you The Lego Movie, Phil Lord and Chris Miller along with Rick Famuyiwa are set to revive an 80’s classic, Greatest American Hero. That’s right, back when male perms were the in fashion and high school kids that look like 30 year olds can wave a switch blade at their teacher and not get sent directly to jail. The series starred William Katt as School teacher Ralph Hinkly, Robert Culp as FBI agent Bill Maxwell, and Connie Sellecca as Lawyer Pam Davidson. Do you like Han Solo? Of course, you do. He may be one of the most iconic characters in film history thanks to his portrayal by the legendary-in-his-own-right Harrison Ford. But can Solo fly solo without Ford, and in his own film set apart from the main Star Wars storyline? That’s the question that Disney and Lucasfilm hope is answered by an affirmative ‘yes’ in the next couple of years when the untitled Star Wars Anthology film about the adventures of young Han Solo arrives in theaters everywhere. With the transfer of the Star Wars rights to Disney, it was inevitable that the Mouse Overlord would try to capitalize on the property as much as possible. This has created joy in a great many Star Wars fans, as we will finally get the chance to see not only the original trilogy continue, but we’ll also be able to take a look into some of the other, lesser known Star Wars lore. Phil Lord and Chris Miller are names that have popped up a lot recently in entertainment news, and for good reason. They are, after all, the duo behind ludicrously enjoyable films like The Lego Movie and 21/22 Jump Street, so it’s no surprise that their considerable talents have been the subject of demand. It seems that they’ll be adding another immensely popular franchise to their impressive resume in 2018, as the pair are set to write and produce an animated Spider-Man feature film.
