Five Nights at Freddy‘s is gathering steam in Hollywood, with Poltergeist director Gil Kenan signing with Warner Brothers to helm the feature, based on the popular horror game. The first in a new wave of video game-based movies on the horizon (Angry Birds I can see, but Cut the Rope? Seriously?), it looks like WB is taking this project seriously, with Kenan and Tyler Burton Smith also scripting the film. Deadline reports that Roy Lee (Lego Movie) and Seth Grahame-Smith (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) will be producing the film. (more…)
If we’re being honest, then you know that the Hollywood lore that’s sprung up over the making of 1982’s Poltergeist is far more interesting than the actual movie Poltergeist. From the question of Steven Spielberg Vs Tobe Hooper: “Who really directed it?” to the supposed “curse” that reputedly killed several cast members, including its young star Heather O’Rourke, the making of Poltergeist is a story far more compelling than the simple haunted house tale starring Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams. It would have been a fascinating post-modernist twist if they remade Poltergeist as a behind-the-scenes dramatization of the E! True Hollywood Story of the original’s production, but instead they slapped together a version that’s a weak tea variation of the original. (more…)

The Poltergeist reboot, produced by Sam Raimi has released the movie poster and a teaser trailer yesterday. We’ve got our hands on an early copy of the full trailer expected out today… but it’s in French. That won’t stop you from forming rock solid opinions on whether Raimi’s reboot can hold a candle to Tobe Hooper‘s incredible original. Take a look and make up your mind Internet. (more…)
There have been many greats in the game of “hide and seek”: children, the snitch from Harry Potter, Osama Bin Laden. None greater however, then Wally Waldo, better known as the beloved character of the Where’s Waldo children books. Each giant book contained double-page spread illustrations depicting dozens of crazy characters, with the single minded goal to find a guy wearing a red and white striped shirt and round, Harry Potter glasses. The original hipster.
Let’s be honest, Waldo is a pain in the ass to find, but when you do… it’s like you’ve hit the jackpot. Film studio MGM is hoping for a jackpot of it’s own, purchasing the rights to develop the children books into a live action film franchise.
LOS ANGELES, CA (November 07, 2011) – MGM’s President of Motion Picture Group Jonathan Glickman today announced that the studio has secured feature film rights to bring Classic Media’s Where’s Waldo?® to the big screen in a live-action family adventure.
Created by Martin Handford and first published in 1987, Where’s Waldo? is one of the most recognizable characters in the world and a pop-culture icon. A publishing phenomenon with more than 55 million books sold worldwide from New York to Sydney to London to Tokyo, Where’s Waldo books are available in more than thirty-eight countries and have been translated into more than thirty languages. Where’s Waldo has also been spotted in gaming, selling more than 4.6+ million Apps for iPhone and iPad.
“We are thrilled to be bringing the search for Waldo to the big screen. Along with our partners at Classic Media, we look forward to making a worldwide adventure that will appeal to Where’s Waldo? fans of all ages,” Glickman said.
“Waldo is the most searched-for character in the world,” said Eric Ellenbogen, co-CEO, Classic Media. “With thanks to MGM, fans everywhere will find Waldo in movie theaters with his motion picture debut.”
MGM’s Cassidy Lange, Vice President, Production, will oversee the project for the studio with Ellenbogen and Handford’s business partner Mike Gornall serving as Executive Producers.
I have high hopes for Waldo and his friends Wizard Whitebeard, twin sisters Wilma and Wenda and his dog Woof (who’ll most likely be cgi). It still questionable as to what could happen in a Where’s Waldo film, since all you did as a reader (there was no reading) was just look for Waldo.

Tobe Hooper, best known for the horror classics The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Poltergeist in linked to direct a new horror film, Djinn. The film’s story is set in Abu Dhabi and will be filmed on location. According the /Film the press release describes Djinn as a,
…unique new take on the haunted house thriller uncovers the dark truth behind classic fairytales of the Genie” and tells a story about “the nightmarish story of a young Emirati couple who return home from the U.S. and discover that their new apartment in a luxury high-rise built on the site of an abandoned fishing village is also home to the malevolent beings known as Djinn.”
Color me intrigued. I know most Americans won’t associate genies with characters inhabiting a horror film so it will be interesting to see how well this film will be received. Will we see familiar elements of the genie story? For example were these genies once contained and are now free, or were they always roaming destructive spirits? If you’re a fan of the Bill Willingham’s comic, Fables you know how dangerous a genie can be if you’re last wish isn’t to put him back in the bottle. Maybe someone forgot that important rule and that’ s why these djinn are on the loose. Who knows, speculation can be rampant for this film since so little is known. For one thing, a malevolent genie is really effin’ scary, they have unlimited power! For a fresh spin on the movie monster I think djinn’s are a great choice.

Direct Tv over the last year or so, has done a shitload of terrible commercials, some pushing the boundaries of poor taste. By posthumously depicting great actors alongside their failing costars who are trying to scratch up a buck or two, acting nonchalantly with their once superior cohorts who’s lives were cut short, leaving these fuckheads to exploit what little success they had by waking the dead to ruin their street cred by placing a classic film into a bullshit commercial. Craig T Nelson included, acting with his daughter from Poltergeist last year, and being extremely cool with making money off a dead little girl…Too soon? No. Never should have been thought up, it’s a travesty and mars the rep that Direct Tv is trying to develop for themselves. It’s like Christian Bale in the interagation room in Dark Knight throwing Heath Ledger to the ground and saying, “I could be home right now watching Direct Tv if I didn’t have to worry about THIS joker!”……Not just poor taste, but a ludicrously asinine and mundane premise to begin with….
