If Lara Croft were an actual person, she would have quite an impressive resume.  She has been reincarnated in video games, two feature films, comic books, novels, theme park rides, and a currently in development film reboot that is currently seeking a director.  And she’s not done yet.  Rise of the Tomb Raider, the most recent addition to the Tomb Raider video game franchise, is set to be released this holiday season for Xbox.  Publishers for the endeavor are Microsoft and Square Enix, with Crystal Dynamics as developer.  A new trailer has been released in anticipation, titled “Descent Into Legend”, which features new and never before seen gameplay footage from the third-person, action-adventure addition to the video game saga. Now that the most wonderful time of the year for us gaming nerds has come and gone, I think it’s high time to get into the biggest hits and misses of what was, without question, a truly exceptional show. It’s difficult to think of another year (without any new console announcements) that was even close to matching this one in terms of excitement and excellent game announcements, and that’s really the best thing that could possibly be said about it. So summer’s almost here and you may have some time on your hands. So why don’t you do the opposite of what your instincts tell you, and spend that free time indoors, in front of the TV, and enjoying the Best Line-up of Games ever assembled for an Xbox system. As the Electronic Entertainment Exo – AKA: E3 – gets underway on the left coast this week, Microsoft is already lording its wares over the entire gaming landscape with a lot of high-profile titles, big sequels, and technological advancements to take your gaming experience to the next level. This will all unfurl over the next several months to a year, of course, but for now you can wet your whistle with these videos and demos. (more…)

TOMB

The Microsoft corporate vice president Phil Harrison announced at Gamescon that the new installment in the popular Tomb Raider franchise will be an Xbox exclusive. There’s no word on whether things will change or stay that way. It’s slated to debut “Holiday 2015,” and if anybody knows what that means, please chime in. Last year’s Lara Croft adventure was a great success and played across wide platforms, so it’s a mystery why Microsoft would shut out loyal gamers for the sequel. Especially since the series has arguably been more associated with Playstation than any other console. Whatever the case, deals such as this one are few and far between in recent years because they do test player loyalty. Even if the status quo shifts, the damage of betrayal is done and documented. Amongst the goodies at Microsoft’s E3 presentation this morning was the announcement that we’re getting not just one, but two new Tomb Raider games in the near future. Following up on last year’s critically and commercially successful reboot of the franchise, Tomb Raider, developers Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics seem to have their eyes on a true Croftian renaissance.
